The Ghost Queen

Rate this book
It had been over a year since Bella last spoke to Drew, purposely ghosting him as she did everyone else she knew. Yet as she laid in the bed reminiscing on the good ol' days, the disturbing news came through. The daunting details of shameful memories creeped in from her mirrored past, of brutal lies, crazed sex, vicious abuse, and betrayal.

But as Bella looked for more desperate ways to bury the truth, she fully realized that it was too late.

This book was published under a pseudonym, but I have to say that I wish I knew who the author was because I am so intrigued by what I read.

This book details the men that have been a part of the author's life. She talks about her own abuse and her father's absence from her life. She recounts sexual exploits and her inability to have a healthy relationship. I hope that the author has found some peace and that she has worked through her trauma.

I read this short novella in a day and enjoyed how it was written. Short paragraphs with verse.

I won this book as part of a goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to goodreads and the author.

Seriously! Wow! Right in the beginning The Ghost Queen by Bella Masala mentions that this book is based on her life, and let’s just say she certainly doesn't hold back. The first chapter really puts it all out there, nice and steamy for you to get things going, and it never slows down from there. Some of it is quite graphic and other parts are left to the imagination, but all in all she must've had one pretty messed up life. The book is very well written, extremely unique, totally raw, and captivating from the very first page.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

I'm conflicted on this one. I like it, yet found it distracting. I was drawn in at times, yet others felt like the author was trying too hard to be too deep. It would go in and out of verse, which distracted me as I focused more on making rhymes than on reading the content and then would have to re-read sections.

That said, I can't imagine what it's like to live as someone who is damaged in a way that doesn't allow them to live emotionally free. What a prison sentence life must be. I hope the author breaks free!

TW: Rape/Child Molestation, emotional and sexual abuse, and trauma

Not really sure how to go about this one. Ghost Queen recounts the past of Bella and the relationships she has had leading up to the present where she has all but ghosted her significant others.

When I was presented this story to read in exchange for my review, I went into this thinking I was getting a romance full of angst and self growth. I got the angst, but there was nothing of romance—just pain. Bella's memories are daunting and each chapter and each relationship is worse than the other. I distinctly remember wishing on numerous times that the story came with some form of content or trigger warning as the story contains mentions of sexual abuse, emotional abuse, cheating, and rape/child molestation. I had to stop on multiple occasions and practice self care because of how triggering this piece was.

There were certain elements that drew me in immediately but then as the story unfolded something would happen or the author's writing style would shift in and out prose and I would instantly be drawn out. I did however like when the author was in verse as her words were both lyrical and thought provoking as verse typically leans itself too.

All in all though, I just don't think this book is for me nor was I in the proper headspace for this type of story when I read it. If you are looking for a angsty reflective contemporary that is short and to the point—this could be your book! Sadly, it wasn't for me.
