This is a light-hearted and practical guide to fatherhood from a veteran father of five, who offers guidance on everything from the ticklish "babies' blotches" and tempestuous "bathtime" to the one of the most important aspects of being a hands-on father, that of simply "being around".
Michael Rosen, a recent British Children’s Laureate, has written many acclaimed books for children, including WE'RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, and I’M NUMBER ONE and THIS IS OUR HOUSE, both illustrated by Bob Graham. Michael Rosen lives in London.
Falls into a strange mid-category, it's not a reference book because all of the pages are anecdotal in style. It's not a narrative book though as it's obsessively arranged in alphabetical order and constantly refers back to each individual entry in encyclopaedic style. But I digress, ignore everything I've just said and read this book if you're a new Dad, an old Dad, an expectant Dad or even a re-instated Dad like myself. The tone is so heartfelt and unpretentious as to be completely accessible. Each point is made in a page or two and as you'd expect from Michael Rosen (somewhat a British hero of mine) it's all written with a lovely sense of humour and a good heart and grace. Really recommended for when you're sat up at 4am with your crying offspring to bring a smile to your face.
