Playing for You is the first book in new-to-me author, Aurora Paige's Hot on Ice series. I love sports stories, especially my favorite sport hockey!
Blake Collins is a third generation goaltender for the California Crusaders. As a "Collins goaltender", he has a legacy to uphold and his overbearing father never lets him forget it. After recovering from a devastating injury, Blake is struggling on the ice and decides to blow off steam at a new night club, where he meets a beautiful young woman who blows him away.
Arianna Santos has the LA nightlife by the tail as the owner of Blue Velvet Lounge. Nightly she hosts the creme de la creme of the LA celebs, so it's no surprise she meets gorgeous, powerful men; she's never been tempted, until now. Recently dumped by her (horrible) boyfriend, she's keeping busy until she literally crashes into the hottest guy she's ever seen. Feeling instant chemistry, they spend one night together, expecting to never see each other again. Best laid plans, right?!
While there were several things I liked about this book, Ari's connection and love for her family, the author's multicultural perspective, the friends, etc, I just didn't connect with the main characters. I found them both immature, especially Ari, constantly jumping to conclusions with very little to go on. In addition, I found the premise a little implausible. As a person who has worked in a hockey organization, I know first hand how much the people who work in those offices love and immerse themselves in the sport. They work tirelessly for the team, the players and the fans. I know the team was "gifted" to her but I didn't buy her as the owner and definitely didn't care for her choice of GM in the end, as if that would solve all the problems. Despite these things, it was a quick, cute read and I'm eager to see if the next story wraps up some of these concerns! Bring on more hockey.
