I’ve been studying and implementing the principles of the ACSM Guidelines for just about 22 years. Almost my entire career as a clinical exercise physiologist. It is the standard for true fitness professionals and covers everything in great detail, while making it all easy to digest. It’s sort of fitting that I came into healthcare reading the 8th edition and now upon my possible, upcoming exit from the field, I am reading the most recent version. It’s bittersweet in a lot of ways, but I’m in need of a career shift and this would be a fitting conclusion. Needless to say, as I step down from my soap box, I think this version of the ACSM Guidelines is superior to previous versions in almost all ways. It’s amazing how little most of the clinical interpretations and patient care guidelines have been changed in the last few decades. However, it’s also comforting to know that the standards for my field remain steadfast and effective. This was a really satisfying, professional literary experience for me and I highly recommend to anyone working towards or currently in the field of exercise physiology.
