A.K. Koonce is a USA Today best selling author. She's a mom by day and a fantasy and paranormal romance author by night. She keeps the fantastical stories in her mind on an endless loop, while she tries her best to focus on her actual life and not that of the spectacular but demanding fictional characters who always fill her thoughts
Izara Castillo has a killer living inside her. At least that's what they told her but she doesn't remember killing. Now she's been sent to The Academy of Six where she has four semesters to discover and control the monster within her. The Academy was created to stop a reckless power, to help students learn to live with their prod but along the way, its mission became twisted, distorted. They stopped helping and began destroying their own. Izara can't find her prod. She's powerless and at the mercy of bullies and would-be murderers as well as her three sexy roommates and her angelic best friend. She must figure things out fast or the consequences will be deadly. She could destroy the academy and everyone there including those she loves. She must find a way to protect them from herself. She must be in control. Even if she has to make a deal with the devil. But everyone knows the devil can't be trusted. However, she has more than her demon side. She carries Mommy's blood and power too.
This series is easy to read, entertaining, and the character growth is good. Izzy made some decisions/mistakes which frustrated me but the guys more than made up for any failings she had. Saint, Phoenix, Malek, and Syko turned out to be everything I could hope for. They were reason enough to read this book. Throw in Azrael and his jeans-wearing pixies and I was thoroughly satisfied.
Listening to this series on audio is the best way to go. Some books are meant for audio and this is one. The characters were engaging, the action was more intense, the humor more entertaining, and the storyline more engaging overall. Jennifer Blom did an admirable job narrating so many female and male characters. She was able to deliver each in a manner so I always knew who was speaking. Kudos to her!
Disclaimer: I listened to the audiobooks, so I haven't the foggiest idea how to spell some of their names. Don't judge me. :) Characters: Overall, I loved the characters. Saint is a favorite for sure and I personally loved Phoenix. Mallick could have been left out of the story entirely and it wouldn't have hurt my feelings. Just poor Psycho. I really enjoyed reading their POVs, except Mallick. I just didn't care about him at all. Sometimes it got a little confusing because Saint and Psycho were similarly written and I'd be confused about who's POV I was in. Suppose I should mention Izzy too. She was Okish. I didn't hate her, but she wasn't the badass she could have been. Instead, she was kind of a boo hoo, poor me and it's all about me sort of character. Especially by the end. GUYS WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THIS BROAD!?
The plot: Ummm there was a plot. Loosely. It had the makings of a very cool world with what could have been a very interesting plot line. It just fell flat. Like MC, why are you so dumb? She should have figured some of that stuff out way sooner and/or had to actually DO something (other than screw multiple guys). I thought the writer took an interesting turn with following the men's reactions throughout her weirdness vs following Izzy and Shade as they spent more time together. It worked for me because I didn't really care about Izzy. To be honest, I finished the series solely because of Saint.
Spice: I would say it's pretty spicy. Group & M/M. I enjoy spice, but there is a time and place. I'm not going to spoil anything but there were a couple of very strangely placed scenes that just plain made no sense and ultimately even made me skip through it.
RH / Quarouple, explicitly open door smex MM MFM MMFM MF, Academy, darkish fantasy, Angel demons shifters fae pixies vampires and more
it has it moments, about 50% meh. But it kept me hooked enough to want more. even for me, the smut was irrelevant and added little to the relationship dynamic or plot. World and character build is strong, and another reason I kept going.
The pixies and that moment FMC asked to see their leader, lol! Psycho and Saint make me laugh. Phoenix and his feelings also amused me. Mallik was just bearable in the end. He's not my favourite out of the group of men.
The plot had its moments too, but like I said... 50% meh
Loved this series, it was different to what i thought it would be, it was packed full of suspense, action and plenty of hot steamy sex, just what the doctor ordered. The first book took awhile to get going but once it did i couldn't put this boxset down, i loved all Izzy's guys but Phoenix the broody bad boy demon held a special place in my heart along side Saint the funny vampire. If you love a supernatural dark read this series is a must read. 4.5 stars.
*WARNING* contains MANY adult situations with multiple partners This boxset took me awhile to get through. I liked the storyline. I felt the whole situation with the boyfriends got a bit tedious by the middle of the second book. I didn't fully figure out what she was, so it was a nice surprise when her parentage was revealed.
This was, in my opinion, a book with a lot of potential but unfortunately fell short. The writing at times was confusing and I was left wondering what was happening. I also found the character and relationship development lacking any strong foundations. Not a bad read, but personally left me wanting.
Actually enjoyed this, wasn't to sure at 1st as it took a while to actually get into but once I finally did wow, I'm actually crushing on phoenix, his bad boy persona is really mouth watering for me lol
I'm glad I finally got round to reading all of this series, it's sexy, snarky and heart-warming. What is Izara's prod? Can she learn to harness it's power? More importantly, can her men ever get on with each other??
I really liked this series and I'm glad it's complete, but for some reason, I just had a difficult time keeping my attention on the story. Still, enjoyed the end.
This was an amazing collection of stories! These two authors make a wonderful combination. The RH stories are always my favorite, and more so while I'm hanging on the edge of my seat waiting for the next chapter or book in a series. Thank you both!
I hate when things fast forward in really awkward ways. There is nothing saying you have to fall in love with all the dudes in book one. The hook here is “what is she?” Which is answered in the most unspectacular way.
