background information is interesting at times and shallow in other places. the example pictures are mediocre. it gives some info on dragons, tigers, butterflies etc but the pictures shown are very small or of tattoos that in this day and age would not pass, are very mediocre
good for an hour, two max of reading and glancing through
Mom picked this up for me brand new at a thrift store because I love tattoo culture and the binding of this book is really cool. It's a beautifully crafted little book and I'm glad to have it in my personal library but mostly just for the first 80 pages.
The sections about the science behind pigments and skin were great and the best, most interesting part was about the history and culture of tattoos in regards to different places in the world. The writing is knowledgeable and passionate.
It was up until this point that I was wondering why Hemingson bothered to call it "Tattoo Design Directory" because it wasn't about designs at all. The last 120 pages are where the book gets it's title. It's essentially just a bunch of, I'm sorry to say painfully mediocre, flash and obvious descriptions of the symbolism behind them. I could have done without it or at least with a heck of a lot less of it.
I like this one better than the author's follow-up book on scripts and lettering. This design directory has pictures, flash, tattoo history and background information on various popular tattoo images. I think it covers a wide spectrum in a simple way.
Love lasts forever, but a tattoo lasts six months longer. -ANON, as quoted on pg 19
Tattoos aren't meant for everybody and they're too goddamn good for some people. -Lyle Tuttle, Tattoo Artist, as quoted on pg 20
Good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. -pg 28
I also enjoyed the information on zodiac signs. I was born in the year of the monkey and I now have a monkey tattoo - the three monkeys which hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. I am also a pisces - I have yet to get a fish tattoo :-)
