This book unveils ten secrets on how to masterfully speak in the technology arena. It is primarily based on stories from entrepreneurs, executives and engineers from technology companies that have shaped Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Jim Grubb (Cisco), Mikko Hyppönen (F-secure), Jane Chen (Embrace Innovations) and many more. Most of them have appeared on the stages of large conferences and events presenting their products and inventions. Today the technology arena is more dynamic and innovating than mobile applications, cloud services, artificial intelligence, clean technologies, blockchain, etc. There are increasingly more spaces to share knowledge and promote products. Both aspects make speaking about technology harder than how should you speak about your product or company in a way that your audience not only gets what you say but gets inspired enough to become followers? The ten practices presented in this book story, demo, metaphor, data visualization, passion, props, presentation hacks, interaction, staging, and memory. All core aspects that a technical person needs to rock the stage at conferences. What You Will Learn Who This Book is For DevOps, developer evangelists, testers, architects, product managers, sales engineers, solution architects, CTOs, CEOs, startup founders, marketers
You may be in love with your new product but others who hear for the first time about it, may not understand what’s special about it.
You need to tame the possible customers’ first impressions. But speaking on stage it’s not your cup of tea. That’s why you are a tech geek and not an actor, right?
That’s the assumption on which the book, Rock the Tech Stage is built. If you want others to see what’s surprising and useful about your innovative product, you may want to learn to be an actor when you are up on a stage, at a conference or a TED talk event. You may want to create a memorable experience of interaction with the audience.
Oscar’s book makes it easier to achieve this goal, by sharing tried and successful practices of famous names, like Steve Jobs and Mikko Hyppönen, and less famous people in the tech world. Because of my experience, my favourite and most interesting tips are the use of metaphors, props, stories and data visualization.
When you incorporate the tips in the above-mentioned categories in your talk, instead of telling how wonderful the product is, you can actually show it. And this is how great actors, writers and speakers get to the heart of the audience.
A memorable talk is about how the speaker makes you feel and not about what it is really proved, i.e., - facts and performance metrics.
The book shows there’s no magic about great speeches. Only the willingness to transpose the passion for your product into the passion for reaching out to your target audience.
The book has an easy flow to read. It took me 4 hours to read it. And I got an idea to put into practice in my profession, which is not in the tech arena.

This book has been written for people in the Tech industry, by someone in the Tech industry, which is why it's very relatable.
It's structured into 10 chapters, which each contain a different focus area for Tech speakers. It has a heap of tips you can put into practise straight away (some a good reminder and some unexpected) and some real life examples from some of the best in Tech. It's a quick read and something you'd want to come back to if you had a big speaking gig coming up.
In Tech and struggle with presenting or just want to be better? Then do yourself a favour and grab this book. It will make you more engaging, more impactful and help you to feel more prepared.
As someone who have spent my whole professional life in the engineering and technology field, I know that effective communication can make wonders for your career. This book, which is structured in ten speaking secrets (tactics), shows real life examples that brilliantly illustrate each of the ten secrets. Both inspirational and tactical, Rock the Tech Stage should be in the bookshelf of anybody working in the technology field.
What differentiates a good sales pitch from an outstanding one? This book reveals the tactics used by established tech communicators who truly connect with the audience. Through surprising anecdotes and a characteristic entertaining tone, it offers a memorable read that goes always straight to the point. Especially helpful for those communicators willing to learn more about the possibilities that videoconferencing and virtual presentations provide.
I was working as a technical evangelist for seven years and had chances to practice all of these tips on the job. It's great to see a curated content which is also covering virtual events. I suggest to all technical people who had no chances to be on stage before. Practice, practice and practice.
"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears ..." Those are the first words that Shakespeare put on the lips of Mark Antony, in his famous farewell speech to Julius Caesar, on the occasion of Caesar's funeral. Mark Anthony's speech is not only considered among the most vibrant words Shakespeare wrote, but also is one of the most compelling pieces of oratory of all time. It is difficult to listen to him in the theater and not get emotional, not feel transferred 20 centuries ago, and to be pierced by anger and indignation in front of the cowardly betrayal of those whom Caesar considered his dearest. And why that speech touches us so deeply? There are many things that bring to that result: a story told in the first person, the stage, some creative and evocative metaphors, some unexpected props ...
In today's world, with the overwhelming presence of IT technologies, and the continuous race for effective communication and leadership, many of us wonder about how much of the great classical speakers stay at nowadays greatest communicators. How much of Mark Anthony's speech can be found on Elon Musk's or Bill Gates's performances? To answer these questions, the book "Rock the Tech Stage", written by Óscar Santaolalla, becomes a mandatory reading, with its meticulous description of the techniques that are most successful in today’s technological communication, as well as give us a useful description of the main risks and difficulties to overcome; all this well supported in examples of real presentations and speeches made by prominent figures in the world of technology.
Óscar reveals to us in his book the ten secrets of effective communication in the world of current presentations. And the most surprising thing is that I’ve been able to identify all of them in the emotive speech of Mark Anthony. I strongly recommend everybody interested in technology, oratory, and public presentations to read this book and discover those ten secrets hidden in the presentations of some of the most notorious today's communicators, in which is also possible to hear the echoes of the most admired ancient orators.
