Based on a true story on the outskirts of Tucson in the early 1920s, this heart-warming Christmas tale of hard-work and sacrifice is exquisitely illustrated, and perfect for taking the whole family from Thanksgiving to Christmas, New Years and beyond.
Story, art, message, simplicity, reality, hope, heartache, appeal for multiple ages and tastes—this book has them all.
I expected and hoped for a specific conclusion by the middle of the book, yet the end still took me by surprise. For a moment I was there with the boys and their families and I cried. It was a beautiful experience.
Elspeth Young, the illustrator, gifted my mom this book who gifted it to me and said she painted me on pg34 as Petey’s mom. I was so very touched by this and so honored. I cried when I read this very sweet, beautiful book. It was my favorite Christmas gift. This book is a gem with an amazing message and the most beautiful art. A favorite to me personally and also to my whole family. Thank you Elspeth!!
LOVED this book--my kind of Christmas story! It's a true story and one children and adults will enjoy. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. I get a new picture book for Christmas every year and some years, it's hard for me to find one I love but this is definitely my choice this year. As most of my friends on Goodreads have Utah connections, you'll be interested to know it's written and illustrated by Utahns. I know you all well enough to be bold enough to say...You're going to love it! JaNeal, Tessa, Karen and April, thinking especially of you!
