Death Dwellers MC: Legacy

Reckless: The Legacy Begins

Rate this book
Being the son of a legend isn’t easy.

And though sixteen-year-old CJ Caldwell idolizes his father, Outlaw, he’s not sure he’ll ever live up to the Caldwell reputation. Worse, he’s not sure he’ll be given the chance.

CJ is expected to finish high school and go to college before he will even be considered as a prospect for the Death Dwellers.

Meanwhile, Outlaw wants the option of a different life for his son. Whether or not the boy belongs to the MC, isn’t a requirement of his and Meggie’s love and support. As he tries to convince his boy to choose a different path in life, Outlaw is unaware of how far into the biker life CJ already is. When he takes his woman and their other kids on a vacation and leaves his beloved firstborn home because of football camp, the unimaginable happens that will forever change the Caldwell family.

There’s only one thing CJ wants more than his father’s approval, the only girl for him, Harley Banks. But when he asks her to go steady, she shoots him down cold, breaking his heart—and little does he know, breaking her own heart.

Now CJ is faced with becoming a man, coping with heartache, and trying to save his younger cousin Ryan from hanging out with the wrong crowd. A crowd who is targeting Harley. CJ is even more hurt that she didn’t trust him enough to ask for help—that hurt fueling the anger already building, skewing CJ’s decisions which go from good to stupid to downright dangerous. Then tragedy strikes, reducing one of the MC member's houses to ashes, and destroying a trust that may never be restored.

Life altering mistakes will be made. Some will live, some will die. And the brutal, bloody reality of being a Death Dweller will spill onto another generation…

I am slowly but surely learning to manage my time more effectively and getting back to writing and connecting with everyone. I'm not completely there yet, but it is slowly coming together. Misled and Misappropriate have been updated with additional chapters and POVs from a couple more characters. Both books have about 30,000 more words and new covers. I have new covers for all the books in the series. Recently Misled placed first in the Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller category on Chick Lit Cafe. The paperback will also be included in an upcoming Reveal Book Box. While working on Reckless, I am also updating the text in the original series. About Reckless - It will be filled with death and destruction, as usual. However, I will admit to being slightly shocked myself at some of the turn of events taking place. I have restarted my newsletter with a new name, KatChats. Until the end of the year, I plan to send it out weekly because of all the news I have to share. After that, I will switch to monthly. I also have a new website. It should be online in a couple of days once the domain transfer completes. I also have a website dedicated to the Death Dwellers. It is still in its early stages, but it is live: https://deathdwellersmc.com.
Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please send them my way.

Kathryn C. Kelly is a New Orleans native who has called southeast Texas home since 2005. She had intended to travel the world but always return to her beloved New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina had other plans. She is the mother of three beautiful daughters and the daughter of one gorgeous mother whose footsteps she followed in by becoming a writer.
Kathryn is the former owner and editor of Inside Rose Rich Magazine. She and her mother have been published by Jove Books as Christine Holden. The books have long been out of print but they got the rights back to the five novels and have plans to re-release them soon.
Kathryn is a cancer survivor. In 2010, she felt a small lump in her breast. In 2015, at the urging of her mother, she went in for her bi-yearly mammogram and was diagnosed with Stage 2b/3a HER2 positive breast cancer. On November 30, 2016, she rang the bell. During her treatment, she was also diagnosed with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome.
In 2013, Christopher "Outlaw" Caldwell introduced himself to Kat in the most cliché way ever. He came to her in a dream. After the inauspicious meeting, he planted himself in her mind and the motherf...the gentleman hasn't left yet. In what was only supposed to be one book about the fictitious Death Dwellers MC, Outlaw has become a source of amusement, a well of frustration, and a bone of contention between Kat and one of her daughters.
She is hard at work on Reckless, the book that will bridge the OGs with a new generation of Death Dwellers. Her work has been included in several anthologies and she is looking forward to other upcoming single title releases, including Savage Suit from the Cocky Hero Club World created by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. She is a former RWA member. She also served as Vice President for the SOLA chapter of RWA.
She is a New Orleans Saints fan, but roots for the Texans, the Rockets, and the Coogs (U of H) as long as they aren't playing any Louisiana teams. She loves champagne and sparkling wine. One day, she will try Snoop's brand. She still loves Chivas Regal but had a chance to taste Sassenach Scotch. A #lifegoal is to one day buy herself an entire bottle and keep it all for herself.
In her head, she is a biker babe with a Harley in her garage, waiting for her to hit the road. In reality, she has yet to hop on a bike and ride. She loves Cards Against Humanity, has very strong opinions that she keeps to herself, has to take her time to talk in public so nothing untoward pops out, and always strives to see the best in people and in life.

UPDATE 5/31/23 Reckless is out! If you read my journey on Facebook, the following text isn't different. But I want to thank everyone so much.

I have been working on Reckless for a very long time. When I scrolled through my timeline, I saw how many times I talked about it and promised it and teased its release. Amidst writing Reckless, I had health scares, new diagnoses, procedures, tests, and surgeries. I watched Memaw Kelly become so very frail. I worried about Kathryn Ferdinand and her mental state and health scares.
Like everyone, the economy took a toll and there were days when I had to stretch a little food to pay for a lot of medicine. Other times, I didn't know if I wanted to bother living anymore. Just from the gargantuan obstacles I faced. One in particular is dealing with electrical issues in the house. I've been trying to figure out how to change bad breakers in the box but I don't want to get fried. That realization strikes me even as I write this. Deep down, I don't want to die. I fought hard to survive cancer and, years earlier, heart failure. I was just tired. All of this affected my thoughts.
There wasn't a month that went by where I didn't think about Reckless. There were many days I didn't because my head was too crowded with other issues. I continued writing and was in several anthologies from Andrea Miles Rhoads and Elizabeth Knox. My submission was accepted to be a part of the Cocky Hero Club. My book was to be based on Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. I was ecstatic. But my illnesses and my concern for my family, whom I love dearly, repeatedly interfered. Then, late last August, I finished Savage Suit. Somehow, I finished my first full length novel since 2019.
It was a moment I will never forget. I cried. After all the lows and the tears and the prayers and the fear, it was finished. And I am very proud of that book but for the first time I was proudest of myself. Yet, there was still the elephant in the room that stole some of my joy: Reckless.
I started the story long before I was accepted into any of the aforementioned projects. And it wasn't finished. My despair returned and I fell into a deep depression. It only deepened when I saw that updating the original series was stalled. I updated Misled and Misappropriate and then stopped because of some of the other personal and writing obligations. I considered laying down my pen.
Misled came out in 2013 and the industry has changed so much. I told myself if I didn't budget for marketing, why bothering releasing the book. However, I made a promise to y'all. And I couldn't leave you hanging OR my characters. I worked from October to December on rewrites. In January, I set up preorders with the intention to release on May 3rd. I told myself I had enough time to complete the book I envisioned, do justice to the series, and make it worth everyone's wait. I begged Christopher to talk to me. I prayed.
Then, I had the hemorrhoidectomy and I thought I would never sit down again. My laptop is old and wouldn't update. It kept freezing on me, so I HAD to sit at me desk. The book grew. Savage Suit was released. I listened to the audiobook and loved it. The pain of the internal and external incisions was intense. My mother was barely able to walk because of back pain. Kate's depression became concerning. Food was low. I received a small shock at the breaker box.
I was exhausted. I quit. I was going to release a statement saying I was retiring from writing. Yet, that was the easy way out. I love writing. I started my first novel at 12. Had I really fought all these years just to crawl away with my tail between my legs? I knew eventually I would have to write again. So I told myself, ain't nothin' but a thing. I have my family. We have a roof over our heads, a car to drive, and food on the table. I pushed the release of Reckless to May 31st. I watched Queen Charlotte. Twice. Alone and then with Kate. I prayed. And I told myself to get back to work. This was when I realized I had to split Reckless into two books. The decision reinvigorated me.
Suddenly, part one was done.
RECKLESS WAS FINISHED.
I stared at my screen and clapped and laughed and cried. It was after 3 in the morning but I called my mother. It was done. Even as I write this, tears are in my eyes. It was almost like the day I rang the bell in November 2016. And, today, Reckless is available to the world. I would love for it to be a smashing success. I wish it gets thousands of reviews. But I don't have marketing money and I still have so many personal obligations. I also have to finish Ruthless because I just can't wait for y'all to see how it all plays out.
To everyone out there, don't give up. Continue to fight and hope and dream and pray.
Thank you to everyone who never gave up on me, even during my darkest days. Thank you for never giving up on Reckless. Much love to each of you.
As much as I want Reckless to be a bestseller, its release represents so much more. Whether it sinks or swims or whether its loved or hated, Reckless is my biggest triumph and, for me, that is everything.

__________________________________________________________
I have to offer my apologies to everyone. I canceled the preorders I wasn't able to complete the manuscript to upload it in a timely manner due to some illnesses I have been going through. I have been undergoing tests and thankfully I have nothing serious. Just very annoying. I broke my tailbone at the age of 19 and, lately, I have been going through holy hell with pain at the base of my spine. More than likely, I will need a third esophageal dilation because my esophagus continues to close up, despite having had two dilations since December. Finally, I have to see a rheumatologist because the major marker that indicates Lupus has always been abnormal or high or positive--I don't know the correct term for this because I try to live my best life and not worry about what may not ever come to pass. Having said that, there is some suspicion that I might have developed full-blown Lupus. These are my most serious issues and I feel as if you deserve an explanation as to why CJ's story is delayed again. The good news is I have only 4 chapters left to completion (and a resend to my editor). You will see advertising because it was too late to cancel. However, instead of rushing the process and the story, I canceled the pre-orders to put out the best possible read for y'all. I'm so sorry for the delay. I contacted Amazon beforehand to put a new preorder in and was told I would be able to do so because of the extenuating circumstances of my health issues. However, when I wrote in to get the approval, I was declined, so as soon as I get this issues straightened out, I will have it back on Amazon at the $0.99 preorder price.

I’ve been waiting for this book for years. This book starts the Legacy series of the Death Dwellers. This is one of my all time favorite MC reads. Christopher (Outlaw) Caldwell is my favorite H. This book explains more history and introduces the children in their new role and growing into themselves. Some the the children will suffer the sins of their fathers as their dads had. I was not disappointed in the outcome. Looking forward to the next book.

A Must read

Omg, is all I got to say! Returning back to the Death Dweller MC world has been a roller coaster of emotions. This book is about the OG’s raising their kids and about the kids in their early and mid teens. It it set up on the kids personalities, how they are going through growing pains, the life of growing up as a Death Dweller kid and some of the consequences. I could not put this book down. It is a bridge to the next chapter of the Death Dweller world and PEACE IS NO MORE!! Be aware it is a cliff hanger and I cannot wait to see what happens!

Interesting Read, but Very Congested

I found this book through signing up to read an ARC, which is a continuation of this book. It is listed as a romance, but there is not much romance going on in the book. You see a potential budding romance, but that is all amidst all the high school and family drama.
Dislikes:
1. The book is a little confusing at some points because there are time jumps that aren't necessarily explained, so you are left trying to piece it together.
2. I absolutely hated how Christopher talked he cursed every other word and talked improper, which was hard to read and made him seem very uneducated.
3. It doesn't seem like your typical MC book but rather a watered-down mafia/gangster book.
4. A lot of things seemed drawn out, I am all for a background story and getting to know the characters, but some things seemed unnecessary.
5. It is stuck in, I guess, an older view of women. It's like all the guys are ok with disrespecting women, and the women in turn are ok with it. You have a select few men who respect their women enough not to cheat but still expect them to be submissive in every sense.

Likes:
1. The storyline is very interesting once you get past the drawn-out parts.... it definitely kept me interested enough to want to read the second half.
2. I like how you begin to see who is going to trade on the family without everything being given away at once, allowing anticipation to grow.
3. You get to know the characters.

All in all, I would suggest it to read mainly based on the ending and the fact that things start progressing more at the end. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so we shall see how things pick up. I am hoping that now we are past the world and character building, we will see more romance and betrayals revealed.

Whilst I enjoyed the storyline I found the book very hard to read. I spent the 1st third of the book wondering if I had missed something because I had whiplash going between all the characters involved. At this stage I don’t know whether my curiosity will overpower my whiplash to continue with this series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I did enjoy this book but I found it to be confusing at first because it started off with so many characters. That reason alone knocked my rating down to 3 stars .

I will be reading the next book.

RECKLESS is the first instalment in Kathryn Kelly’s contemporary, adult DEATH DWELLERS MC: LEGACY dark, MC romance series-a spin off / next generation set in the author’s Death Dwellers MC world. RECKLESS introduces the next generation including CJ Caldwell (Christopher ‘Outlaw’ Caldwell’s son), his sister Rebel, brothers Ryder, Axel, Rule, and their adopted brother Diesel, as well as Val and Zoann’s sons Ryan and Willard, and Johnnie and Kendall’s kids Harley, Mattie, JJ and Rory; Mort and Bailey’s daughter Harley. You do not have to have read the original series but for back story and cohesion I recommend catching up on the DEATH DWELLERS MC.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise including graphic language and violence, there WILL be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives, following two timelines, RECKLESS focuses on the volatile and unstable world of the Death Dwellers MC. As each generation begat the next, the sins of the father followed. Christopher ‘Outlaw’ Caldwell had hoped to raise his family without the fear of reprisal and history repeating itself but life in the MC often meant a life straddling the rules of morality and respect. As the next generation, all teens under the age of eighteen, step forward to claim a place for themselves, there is someone waiting to strike down and take control. At the heart of the story is a fight for power within the old guard, a generation who believes they deserve it all, and one young man who knows the time will come when he must step up and take control. All is not well- the family dynamics are fragile, abusive, authoritative and competitive; an MC princess pushes the line until she pushes too far.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, dangerous and questionable characters including all of the Death Dwellers MC series couples, and their extended families and children . The author includes a chart at the beginning of the story, otherwise a spreadsheet may be necessary to keep track of connections and relations.

RECKLESS is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, abuse and corruption, discrimination and rejection. The premise is detailed, complex, dark, gritty and raw; the next generation of characters are often immature, spoiled, self serving and impulsive; the old guard struggle with what is happening in their lives and the lives of their overly dramatic children. RECKLESS ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Heed my w*rning, the language is graphic and strong.

AMAZING..LOVED IT
Ok where to start..waited a long time for this book and I wasn't dissapointed.
Loved loved loved the back story. Anything with Sebastian(Cee Cee), Logan, Sharper, Big Joe & Kaleb is my favourite. The dynamic in this group is off the charts. I would read a book just on them. Very interesting to find out the relationship between Patricia & Cee Cee and her jealousy of her sister's Tess' pregnancy. Finding out they were marreid was another shocker. It has always been Cee Cee wad a rapist blah blah blah but finding out the only reason Logan didn't kill Christopher was because of Cee Cee. Is Outlaw ever gonna find out any of this on the future that his mom wasn't such victim. Are we gonna meet any if Outlaw & John Boy's other brother & sisters? That Cee Cee visited Outlaw as a baby? Anyway imagine if there were pics. My big question is who killed Tess? Simon made it seem he did it on Logan's order but Cee Cee implied Patricia did it. And who waa starving Tess. Also what happened to Simon?

Rebel was something else. Imagine. So this day and age. All teens are victims mantality. How do the characters come back from what happened to Meggie. I thought for sure the way you worded it there was a chance Josephine survived, I'm still holding out hope. Poor Maggie not again.

This Diesel/Tabitha thing is gonna be interesting. I'm on the team yuck for a thing with Rebel & Diesel..

Harley & CJ. I loved them. I really liked how you wrote CJ. He was a breath of fresh air. No macho or brooding just a nice guy. I appreciated his innocence.

Ryan is a disrespectful prick. Get over it. The male version of Kendall.

My absolutely favourite character of this book was Molly. I don't know who your inspiration was for her was but you nailed it. I have never read a book or watched a movie that had a character like her. I laughed out loud..good job. I also felt sorry for sometimes and sometimes I felt like, "is she faking"?

Such a good read. I think you captured all the players characters amazingly. It was nice to see Kendall's personal growth and not suprised at Johnnie's cluelessness.

I am soo excited for Ruthless. Please don't make us wait.

The person who rated 1 on Amazon Kindle doesn't know these characters. Doesn't appreciate the dynamics of the Death Dweller world.

I hope your health keeps improving.
Thank you for this series. It is one of favourites

Reckless is the long awaited continuation of the Kathryn C. Kelly's Death Dwellers series. The book serves as a bridge between the OG Dwellers and the next generation. Be forewarned that it does end on a cliffhanger.

I was so happy to be back in this familiar world. The main story takes place about 17 years after Christopher "Outlaw" Caldwell first Megan Foy. All the original Dwellers make an appearance but the story mainly centres on the new generation who are all tweens and teens. The young love of CJ and Harley. Young teen Rebel's crush on the very adult Diesel. Rory and Matilda dealing with the disfunction of their parents Johnny and Kendall's marriage and parenting style. It is about generational trauma and how hard it is to fully escape it even with the best of intentions. It is also about Christopher and Megan and the love and connection they share to this day.

This was an amazing read and I cannot wait for the next book! I would suggest reading the original Dwellers series before Reckless for a richer reading experience. Welcome back Kat! Your words have been missed.

This is a hard review to write, because I really did enjoy the book, well parts of the book. This book deals with the second generation of dwellers, as well, as the first generation at this focuses, mostly the second generation.
Honestly, I got a little bog down and information if that makes sense sometimes it was confusing going from character to character to character. I think I would preferred less points of you. And I focus more on Harley and CJ but I do understand where the other characters points of view needed to come in to play, but it got, kind of confusing to me don’t get me wrong I enjoy the story I just think there was some things that could’ve been better left to the imagination or points of view that I really didn’t think added anything to the story. But what do I know? I know I will absolutely read the next book And I know I absolutely support Miss Kelly and I know the struggle she has had in her life recently and I appreciate the work and dedication she put into this book. The book was a solid 3 1/2 stars for me.

I loved this book so so much ! Of course, I absolutely adore the entire series and the dynamic world created by the fabulous author, Kathryn C. Kelly.

It seems like I've been waiting forever for this book and let me just say that the author really came through for her readers with this one. Reckless is a stunningly intricate bridge from the original club members and the newest generation of the Death Dweller world. It features many of my all time favorite characters and it is absolutely loaded with emotions, passion and angst. There is intrigue galore and a lot more turmoil to come in the next book.

I give it five flying stars !

I loved this so much! It was packed with darkness, emotions and love. The sweet times were equaled only by the nail biting times. There were plenty of both. The Death Dweller seniors have their work cut out for them with their children. Wow!

I have read the series for years and enjoyed every book. This book though, was my absolute favorite. This was perfection! This author is at the top of her game! She even made me like Outlaw a little. Don’t come for with comments. It’s a well known fact that I loathe Outlaw.

I am on pins and needles waiting on Ruthless! Superb.

Loved, loved, loved it. Going back to the legacy of the original members and how it started was great.
I laughed so much at Molly. Poor, girl had no brain. Johnny is such a jerk. Can't believe I am saying this but maybe Kendall needs to knock some sense in him. Where on earth did Tabitha come from and how did Diesel meet her. She is a trouble maker.
Kat I hope that the next book is out soon.

Worth the wait

I love the DW MC series, and this did not disappoint. CJ and Harley are YA now and were the focus of the story. We were also given a glimpse of the other kids, and their personalities and possible story lines. I like Kendall in this story, not sure what is going on with Johnny, they need a break from the drama.. Heads up it ends on a cliffhanger, good news next book appears to be coming out in September. Love this author, and the entire series.

The Death Dwellers are my favorite MC to read over and over again. Since CJ was a little boy in those books, I knew I wanted to read his story. He was hilarious with the names he called his uncles …..ashf@ck …… was the best 😂.

Book 1 shows us all the club kids and we see they are good at causing trouble AND getting out of trouble.
This book is GOLD and I can’t wait to get to Book 2.

I don’t ever want this series to end! It’s the series I read again the most. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The story line had me so captivated that I had to read the book twice. Thank you for another great story in the the Death Dwellers saga. Please keep the books coming, look forward to reading Ruthless.

OMFG!!!
That hit it right out of the park and 500+ pages later it's still not stopping. The young children we knew are now hormonal teens.

Rebel makes Kendall look well adjusted.

Ryan is going to be skinned alive and Rory, is possibly a sociapath in the making.

What has happened to Johnny???

Molly, where has she really come from and is she all that she seems??

Reckless takes us back into the Death Dwellers MC world with the second generation and is absolutely fantastic! Be sure to check the trigger warnings before indulging if that's an issue. These characters are very descriptive in their language and behavior and I absolutely love it! This a gritty, fun, emotional story that grips you from page one and hangs on tight until the very end.

As always I want to give this more than 5 stars. DDMC is my favourite MC series and none it’s the kid’s chance to term their stories as they prepare for life in the MC. CJ is a good mix of outlaw and Megan and one day be Pres.
He’s in love with his childhood friend, protector of his siblings and resented by his cousin and his uncle and yet still remains one of the nicest lads you could meet
