This book, from an exhibition of Georges Roualt’s Miserere et Guerre, presents Roualt’s prints in a beautiful format. Just as importantly, it interprets them in essays that explore the Christian symbolism of Roualt’s perennial theme of suffering. In addition to these interpretive essays, I also appreciate the explication of his print-making techniques. One question that remains after I finished the book was who put together the biblical quotations with each print. The essays tell us that Rouault titled the works but don’t mention that he selected biblical passages for them. Was that the curator’s choice?
