The Foundation Licence Manual for Radio Amateurs is the RSGB course-book for those who wish to become radio amateurs in the UK. In line with the progressive three-tier UK licence structure, the Foundation Licence Manual is the first step in the natural progression to the Intermediate and Full licence.
This book sets out to provide the very latest information required to obtain a UK Foundation licence. Broken down into 15 easy to digest sections Foundation Licence Manual for Radio Amateurs covers all you will need to know to be successful in the examination. This book provides insight into technical basics, receivers, transmitters, antennas, feeders and propagation. There are details of the operating practices & procedures you will need to know alongside safety considerations, electromagnetic compatibility and licence information. The practical assessments are explained and there is a helpful guide to how to best approach the Foundation examination itself.
Written in an easy to understand style by acknowledged exams expert Alan Betts, G0HIQ the Foundation Licence Manual for Radio Amateurs is the ideal book for those coming to amateur radio for the first time.
The first step on the RSGB’s three-rung examination set for amateur radio. Foundation introduces all of the key points of radio theory and practice. The exam is not difficult once you have read the book - everything you need is here.
Even if you have a reasonable knowledge of electricity this book introduces some of the technical aspects of radio use which most folk won't have come across, such as standing waves and matching antenna. This is the extra detail needed to pass the Foundation exam and this book is a gentle but informed introduction to the subject. The only slight criticism I have is I would have preferred more example exam questions.
Gives a great insight into starting the hobby of amateur radio
The book is well thought out and well lid out. It shows the basics required for the foundation licence. There are specific sections for the main topics . Transmitters. Frequency. The basic electronics etc... you do not need to have prior knowledge of the subject to be able to read and understand this book. Everything is explained at the lowest level to give the reader the best chance of understanding the subject.
The manual is essential reading for the Foundation Licence. While I found it interesting, it was also hard to concentrate sometimes. I think this is due to there being large amounts of text, some of which is a technical nature. An updated version would be good to double the amount of colour images to add some variety and break up the text.
This book is enough for you to pass the foundation exam and introduces many useful concepts. But there're still much more to learn if you would like to operate your radio in practice.
