THE BUTLER’S APPRENTICE PART ONE: THE GLEANING

Rate this book
Jinx was nothing like the other orphaned girls in Safehaven. Short, light skinned, and emerald green eyes, she always seemed out of place and never truly fit in. Her dream was to get into Safehaven’s military with her sister Della, but when she is utterly embarrassed in class, her plans are in danger of being destroyed. Just when she thinks all hope is lost, the mysterious Butler of Safehaven, Artias, offers to train her in the sword. What Jinx soon discovers is that his offer comes at a high price when her future and her very life are put in danger. Faced with a double life and an uncertain future, Jinx must risk everything to make her dreams a reality.

The publisher of this book seems to have put a lot of faith in the author as this novel comes in three different formats. Currently, the novel is available as a Kindle e-book, as a paperback, and even as a hardback! Each format is priced accordingly.

In general, I do not spend a lot of time reading fantasy novels but, the title of this novel looked promising. Since the Kindle Ebook version was so affordable I purchased a copy of it right away.

Right away one will notice that this novel is highly accessible and readable. It is written around the high school level but a Literate Junior High Schooler would also easily be able to read and comprehend it. However, this does not mean that the book is childish in any sense. The book does have some mature themes but like a classic fantasy novel, it leaves these to the imagination of the reader. Basically, this book is written in such a way that anyone of any age can read this novel and get something out of it.

The novel mainly follows the adventures and trials of an orphan girl named Jinx. However, the novel also spends quality time on the backstories, current issues, and thoughts of other characters. In that regard, I found the author's use of adjectives and adverbs to be very helpful in clarifying and describing events as well as helping me to better get to know the interesting characters I met as I read through this novel.

One of the main positives of this novel is that there is always an information gap between the reader and the novel at any given point. One never has enough details to predict what will happen next with complete accuracy. However, in spite of this, the author makes sure that his readers have the background information to understand what has happened and what has lead characters to holding their dispositions. Occasionally the novel can be a little bit wordy and a bit wooden but none of that enough to distract one from this very compelling read.

I eagerly look forward to part two of this novel.
