The life of an unusual farmer and his basic philosophy are recorded in this book. The main part is set in the middle of the 20th century but enough recollections are included to outline the life of an independent child. Early on, he acquired a strong desire for a home that would be secure. This surfaces early and appears repeatedly throughout the book. He was able to establish a home on the farm, which then became only place to him, the center of his universe.
