It’s fair to say that I am quite a few years older than the target market for this book and I did wonder how I was going to review it after receiving a gifted copy from Walker Books. However, I can still remember my teenage years vividly, plus, I have two teenage children and another who has been through the teenage years so it is not like I am that out of the loop.

What I will also say is I have never heard of Nikki Lilly or her YouTube channel before so I knew nothing about this inspirational young lady. I do know what it is like though to be the parent of a child who has to have numerous operations, spend a lot of time in hospital, and has an illness that can not be cured. I commend Nikki for her outlook on life and her desire to bring joy to others and be a shining light.

This hardback book is split into nine sections, plus Nikki’s final words at the end. From ‘Be Yourself’, to ‘Dare to Keep Going’, and ‘Kill then with Kindness’ the book has many a wise word and speaks to teenagers directly rather than an adult telling them how to control their tempers, moods, feelings. This has been written by a teenager for teenagers and she understands what they go through every day.

Within these nine sections you will find advice on how to approach parents – believe me, we are more approachable than you think, how to have a digital detox, make time for some TLC, and allowing yourself to just be you. As well as make-up advice, how to make a moisturizing face mask, DIY lip scrub, and may more as well as recipes and life hacks.

The book is a complete guide for teenagers and it is written in an engaging and fun way too. Nikki has also opened up about her condition, her family, and how she feels. There are plenty of photos within too.

The book is truly wonderful and inspiring. It would be worth investing in for any teenager. The book isn’t about the teenage years being all rosy and lovely, it is a truthful book that shows that teenagers have bad days, angry days, emotional days alongside fun, joyful, and exciting days. It is a book about learning to love yourself and be yourself. As Nikki quite rightly states ‘I’d rather be myself by myself than be with someone I can’t be myself with.’

"I'd rather be myself by myself than be with someone I can't be myself with".

Nikki Lilly promotes self-love, patience with yourself and ultimately sticking it to the man if they don't think you're good enough. In a world where social media tells young children, and adults, that being perfect is the only way to feel happy or successful, we need more people like Nikki Lilly being shared with young people.

What I liked so much about this book though wasn't necessarily the encouragement to be confident and believe in yourself, but instead that this book was completely realistic - there will always be bad days, losses and impossible situations, but there probably won't be situations which nobody else has ever experienced. Children often fail to see that, because in their innocence they just don't know how horrible and wild the world can be. Maybe sharing stories like this helps? Maybe it doesn't. But it certainly seems a much better approach to me to helping children see that they aren't alone in their struggles than the perfection of a TV advert or archetypal social media influencer where everything gets better with a good edit.

I think this is a great idea - bring on more Nikki Lilly to children's literature!

Super inspirational!

The first time I heard Nicki Lilly being interviewed on This Morning TV, I was in awe of her wisdom and positive can-do attitude. She has achieved so much for her young age and it was a pleasure to hear her share her thoughts and experiences.

Since I follow her on Instagram, I thought I'd check out her new book. I must admit, I'm 21, so not exactly in the target audience, although honestly a lot of what she says in the book still applies to twenty-somethings (and beyond!). Especially in the age of Instagram and selfies and information-overload. Reading this brought back a lot of memories from those years (god I sound like a grandma XD).

Nikki seems like a such a lovely person! Great icon for young girls and teens around the world. She is so positive and yet very honest about her struggles, which is admirable as she has certainly hasn't had it easy.

Conclusion: lovely read - would especially recommend for teens and pre-teens. I wish I'd read this back then! I look forward to reading the books she writes in the future :)

I absolutely loved this book, it is just a really good and heart warming story.

*WARNING. ANYTHING FROM THIS POINT AND BELOW MAY BE A SPOILER.*

Nikki Lilly shares her best tips on how to live your best life, and also writes about her experiences from the past. I admit that I have only watched around 3 of her videos but I will definitely start to. She also shares about how her condition (It affects her right side of her face, it is called Arteriovenis malformations or AVM for short) has affected her mental health over the last few years. What I really liked about this book was that everything that she wrote she did not do it in a sulky way, and even tried sometimes to throw some jokes in. Nikki is an inspirational character for all ages, races, genders and everything in-between. Another good thing in this book is that Nikki adds some tips and tricks for self care and mental health care. Overall, I loved this book and I would recommend this book to anyone!

This is such an inspirational book mainly aimed at girls in their early teens on how to keep being yourself no matter what. In the book Nikki addresses the importance of self love and care, how to stay safe online, and how to never compare yourself to others and much much more. As well as addressing very serious parts of teenage life, Nikki adds her own life story’s plus some delicious recipes suggested by this junior bake off winner.
