John Templeton Smith served in the RAF and for a few short years was an airline pilot.
He moved into aerospace journalism in his 30's, before having the good fortune in finding that the bestselling thriller writer, Desmond Bagley, lived nearby.
With Bagley's guidance on writing the novel, Smith went on to produce ten novels beginning with Skytrap (written under the name John Smith, and published by WW Norton, NY in 1984).
Smith went on to teach Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University (OCU) during the late 1980's, and it was during this period that he penned the "John Winter Trilogy": 'White Lie', 'Saigon Express', and 'Then a Soldier'.
Should be on your reading list. Well written, fast paced and keeps you guessing. Loved the flying scenes, having flown myself...long ago and far away. Description of Greenland's climate is very accurate... if you have been there yourself you will totally agree with him. Hypothermia and frostbite can be your constant companions. Its ironic that Greenland and Iceland have the opposite names.... the only thing green in Greenland is the greenish hue of the Ice. Its over 50 years ago that I was there but the author captured its majestic scenery and brutal climate perfectly. In my days, if you traveled to Greenland from Denmark... you had to sign a paper to acknowledge that if the weather closed down... you realised that you were stuck until such time that they could fly again... and that could be more than a week ! My numerous trips to the USA took us over Greenland and from 36000Ft up... the scenery is breathtaking. But to truly experience the country, you must visit... only then can you start to appreciate the majestic brutality of the country. Go before its too late..... the Glaciers are melting and the Danes are pulling out... so go while you still can.
-John Templeton Smith.... keep it up... more of the same please ! Albert
Magic. If you’ve ever wanted to go and “visit” Greenland, read this book before you go. Or, take it with you. It’s a real eye-opener. It didn’t take me but a few pages into it to know he’d been there, done that, and survived. That’s a key to knowing this book, its story is like so many great stories told around a camp fire, a bar, a barracks, or an Igloo while you’re wrapped in elk skins. Consequently, the story is beautifully crafted. The characters are vivid. And, the descriptive scenery magnificent. Bon Voyage!
What makes a "good read"? Well, maybe when you find yourself reading at 11:30 at night, and thinking that you have to get up early the next morning. Or, maybe, munching down your lunch quickly so that you can get a bit of reading in. Maybe taking the dog for a walk and thinking about the book and how good it is. Or maybe rushing to finish reading it, at the same time sad, because you are close to the end. This book? Yes, it's a good read.
I enjoyed this book. Nice twist at the end that I did not see coming. Vengeance all round. Good action and not a lot of gratuitous sex which I prefer (I never could understand why some want to read about other people's bedroom activities. What is the point when you don't get any of the fun?).
An excellent book, a genuine 'page turner' adventure story. Great character is really authentic with excellent backgrounds and an obvious knowledge of flying and the northern Arctic.
So well written at times l really Felt as cold as some of the characters were suffering! Brilliant 🤗
Loved the start of this story however although it was entertaining and story looked promising it soon became a bit far fetched ok if nothing better to read
