The history and philosophy were interesting, but I was hoping for a better practical overview and discussion of what joints to use and when. More pictures and examples of how things can be constructed would have been helpful. While the book calls itself a beginner’s guide, at least in knowledge of Japanese joinery techniques, some prior general carpentry knowledge seems to be a prerequisite, because my absolute beginner’s mind had a hard time following and visualizing the steps (this is where more pictures would have been helpful). Also, the purpose of Japanese joinery techniques not using fasteners or glue or power tools was emphasized repeatedly, but undermined when the instructions then used… glue and power tools. Overall, this book needed better support from an editor (grammar, mix of metric and imperial units, repetitive sections). I would seek out other sources for understanding this craft.

Quite disappointed by this book. I was expecting to read about basic types of joints used in Japanese joinery but this is not at all the case. This book is more about an introduction to Japanese woodworking. The brief history and how it ties to Buddhism, and Shintoism were a nice read though.

An excellent introduction as its all new to me. I especially love the reverence for nature that is infused in the philosophy behind the Japanese Joinery techniques.
