This book is not what I expected at first, and that's good. I was looking for a book of localized short horror stories to creep me out just a little bit before bed and then I could come back the next night. Instead, Missouri Ghosts is a really solid folk anthology, more about the types of ghost stories Missourians tell and, just a little, what that reveals about the tellers themselves.
That being said, Missouri Ghosts mostly focuses on documenting the stories within that context, and not necessarily analyzing them or making connections between them and the storytellers. In addition, a fair amount of the work is summarized versions from other folk lorists.
Ultimately, the book is reasonably fun to read and will provide a FANTASTIC source base for people studying folk lore deeply, but not necessarily something I think I will read again any time soon.
