Pick a Pup

Rate this book
Every Child can be a Reading Star! If you could pick a pup, what pup would you pick? Who would you have to ask to pick a pup? In this book, a girl asks her mom and her dad if she can pick a pup.

In this charming beginning reader, a bi-racial family sets out to adopt a dog. Even though their daughter doesn't know it yet, mom and dad have already decided a new pet will soon be part of their family. Simple sentences like, "I wanted to pick a pup." and "I asked my dad, "Can I pick a pup?" use repetition to reinforce learning. A familiar situation of a child asking both parents (and hearing them both respond with encouragement to ask the other parent) will have both kids and adults smiling in recognition.

Pick a Pup is part of the Reading Stars series. Reading Star books are for kids at the very beginning of a lifetime love of reading. Each book features fewer than 50 words and uses repetition to build confidence.

This is a great way to get children starting to read , I like the hints at the beginning of the book about getting them to read, and I also liked the reading stars at the end , it may be just a quick book but I can see how it would help them to recognise words and sounds to help them read it.

What parent’s haven’t employed the age-old ploy of avoidance by sending a child requesting an iffy item to the other parent. “Ask your mom.” “Ask your dad.” This sweet beginning reader uses this tactic wonderfully. The story follows a young girl with one such desire after spying a sign inviting the adoption of a puppy.

Early readers will have no idea they are learning sight words through repetition and short sentences in a cute story with fun colorful, full page art. For reading in a class setting, there is a word list at the end of the book that can be used to track new words or for use in vocabulary lessons. In addition to sight words, this book would be an interesting way to introduce the idea of pet ownership to a young child.

Adorable

This book lifts up the spirit of every child who wants to buy a pet. I love how the child reacts when the question was asked several times between the mom and dad😉
The reading star page is great.

Review of 'Pick a Pup' by Juliana O'Neill

A lovely and adorable tale of an innocent child ( belonging to a bi-racial family)'s attempt at convincing her parents to pick a pup. A simple and lucid story that not only normalizes the idea of bi-racial families but also teaches concepts like politeness, positive communication between family members and treating each member of the family with similar respect and equity. But the biggest highlight is the fact that newbie readers will never realize that they are actually learning new vocabulary through repetition technique and short words which has been used in this book throughout.

The illustrations have been beautifully done in such a way that children will definitely enjoy turning pages till the end. A revision list of words at the end is a perfect way to close the book with a check on how much vocabulary the reader has learnt post reading. Additionally the arc copy I received was perfectly done with no grammatical errors or spelling issues.

The reason I have given 4 stars is because I did feel the story to be a bit abrupt in terms of ending and the story could have been a little longer. Otherwise a fantastically composed book and definitely recommend it to all newbie English language readers; regardless of age.
