As the protagonist touched the precincts of Meghalaya, unaware of the creepy & spine chilling occurrence he was running into, the veils of unknown unfolded, and made their appearance. But a journey ought to have such glitches. This travelogue is a tapestry sewed with threads heartening friendships, magical locations, stimulating folklores and invigorating encounters. Amidst this, someone special crosses his path unexpectedly, and in the end, he is left befuddled with the game destiny plays.
I will keep my reviews short and off from traditional track as this book is a feeling. There isn’t much blurb to discuss. It’s more of the feeling or imagination. It’s a travel experience of the author. It portrays the journey from Mumbai to Meghalaya. Author has started it with poetry and there are number of poems and lines in the book. They are well written and you obviously can’t ignore them. I picked up this book on rainy day because I always associated Meghalaya with rain and clouds and author has started narration with hills and clouds that instantly stole my attention. I desperately want to travel there. I liked certain realistic and smart conversations such as “So are you not happy in mumbai?” And the reply was amazing because i feel the same way about metro cities and living in small towns and especially the thing about passion. Author has given fascinating titles to the chapters such as “Never have I ever”. I liked the narration style of the author. It’s captivating. I could imagine the entire thing in my mind. The language of the book is lucid so that everyone can pick it up. Author has shared some of the common and uncommon experiences too. Overall it was indeed different experience as compared to other books, this book is focused only on travelling while in other focus is more on story. So that makes this book different. It was quite different and enjoyable read.
#quote , “Nobody can manage time. It's time that manages us. It flows like a flowing river where you cannot touch the same water as it is never constant. Once we flow with it, things are smooth, but when we try to rule over it, we fail miserably.”--
I have traveled to Meghalaya in 2016 and was awestruck with the sheer beauty of nature and humbleness of the people. When I came around this book title I instantly had to pick this one up.
Why you should read this book
1. If you like travelogue this book is definitely for you 2. If you like a book on intricate human relations and interaction this book is for you 3. If you believe in legends myths and folklores then it is a must read.
Narration of this book is crisp and gives a new take to travelogues. Our writer duo has narrated an enticing story woven around travel, local believe and humane nature. Our protagonist lives a typical Mumbai life and a mundane job that keeps him busy. But apart from his regular life he is a completely different person while traveling. He likes to travel slow indulge in the surrounding and absorb the maximum. Travel is his refuge from a monotonous job. I really liked the description of the surrounding nature and miniscule details taken into account while writing the book. I was amazed to see the seer grandeur of mystic Meghalaya but reading this book made me realize what all I have missed visiting. The book serves as an ideal itinerary for someone planning to visit Meghalaya. The book gives us an insight of the people the tribe there cuisine and there holistic approach towards living a simple life. How there life value are based around nature and there way of life based out of folklores. Yes folklores are the real highlight of the book, the chapters of the book is based around folklores and how they have shaped the life of these indigenous tribes. These folklores are interesting entertaining and relevant even in these modern times.
Have you ever read a book which takes to places where you want to go for a long period of time and it might also gives depiction of various people which you met in traveling.
This book is wonderful journey. Author uses simple words and it's really easy to understand.
Little bit of fantasy is also their in this book , our protagonist dreams about places after reading a lot of that place in detail , it's horrifying adventure at some time.
A well developed novel with equally good characters. 🤎🤎🤎🤎 from my side.

REVIEW
Mountain Mist & Meghalaya is a tremendous travelogue written by author duo Hanisha Raghunath and Urvesh Bhatt. This books travels along the journey of the unnamed protagonist to his trip to the exquisite Meghalaya from highly packed and fast pacing Mumbai.
This travelogue deliberately focuses on the protagonist’s entire stay and wanderings around the beautiful places of Meghalaya. Each and every location which has been depicted on this book will attract the readers to an extend where right after finishing the book, the readers will make a mental note to visit Meghalaya one day. All the places has been beautifully and picture perfectly described by the authors that anyone who is reading this book will not be able to see the places through their mind’s eye but also can feel the breeze of Meghalaya on their skin, smell the soil of the land and taste the ethnic food of the region.
What makes this book and Meghalaya special is, it is filled with so much of interesting folklores which has so many lessons, values and morals to instill in the hearts of the people. There were so many good characters in this book which will give us an assurance that humanity is after all not lost. Through this book the writers have conveyed that Meghalaya is not only filled with rich vegetation, forest and traditions but also with good-natured and heart of gold people. People of Meghalaya were the sweetest, they were innocent, has higher helping tendency and of course their love and respect for mother nature cannot be accounted to any other kind of love that is prevalent in this world right now. And the other interesting thing about Meghalaya was all its people were great storytellers. They know how to deliver a story in an interesting way. They have reasons and a big story behind everything that they do in their day to day life.
There were lot of selfless and interesting characters with whom you will fall in love with because of their personalities. An unknown driver who helps the protagonist at an unlikely hours. Kennedy who was the tourist guide as well as driver of the protagonist and Hotel in-charge Prince and Prosidh. All the three of them, Kennedy, Prince and Prosidh treated the protagonist like a brother and invited him into their cocoon. The gestures these people shows towards the protagonist was heart-warming and extremely lovely to read. All these things will make it very heart breaking for the protagonist as well as the readers to leave behind Meghalaya and its people. And there was this traveler mother and kid who makes their appearances every now and then, it was inspiring to see the mom and son duo travelling to wonderful places. Guess, there will be sequel to this book.
The writing style was exceptional, there was a poetic undertone to everything that has been written on the pages of this book. Certain lines will make you want to read it again and again so as it experience it once more. And the comparisons the writers of this book has done through their writing was very interesting. This book will wake up the sleeping traveler inside everyone including the people who aren’t a big fan of travelling and touring. And this book also emphasized on the difference between a Tourist and a Traveler. Through this story you will understand the thirst, feelings and happiness of a traveler.
In this lockdown, if you feel like you’re trapped inside your home and you feel like you wanna take a vacation but you can’t rather what you can do is pick up this book and read it. You can go on a vacation even without leaving the confinements and the safety of your home and the best thing is this trip will feel more real than the vacations you’ve taken before in you real life. That wonderfully it has been written and Meghalaya is a great place to be in.
MY VIEWS
I never call myself as someone who is enchanted by travels but every time I read something about North East India, I wanted to visit it so very badly. And Meghalaya is one of the major states I wanted to visit in North East. This book actually increased my urge to visit Meghalaya at least once in my life but the authors of this book consistently says visiting Meghalaya just once is next to impossible because there is so much more to explore and it has lots of stories to share with us. Each and every place the protagonist visited was so unique, I did not know that the cleanest village in Asia is located in India, until I read this book. Okay, I don’t want to reveal anything any further, everything about this book was super amazing. And that’s all I can say.
Initially I wanted to visited Meghalaya because of the living root bridge which is something that attracts me so much but this book made me realize the people of Meghalaya is lot more better than the place itself.
I personally liked the way in which the protagonist travel. His travel agenda was very spontaneous and adventures. He was enchanted by the unknowns of every place he visits. He was truly interested in knowing the background of this place and the stories intertwined with them. This book was like a window to look into the mind of a traveler and their thought process.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book to bits and pieces. I was completely fulfilled and happy about this book. It felt better than going on a trip that too particularly during this current Pandemic situation.
My rating for this book would be 5 out of 5 stars
I would like to recommend this book to each and everyone who loves to travel. If you are someone who wants to become a traveler or write travel blog or travelogue, then this book would be a great inspiration. If you are someone who isn’t much into travelling or hate travelling around, read this book to know what you are missing out. In the end you will fall in love with travelling, even if you still hate travelling at least you would have mentally visited this amazing place that everyone has to visit in their life time.
I really hope there will be a sequel to this travelogue, it was utterly enchanting!
Read this book without any excuses and do let me know how you felt about it!!
This is one of those books that don’t have an explanable blurb but in a good way. It kept my interest through the twists and turns that where so random and sudden I could have never predicted them.
The protagonist is on a solo trip to the northeast India and discovers many great things on his journey. The book showcases his journey and along with details of his travels, there are the stories of people he meets and taleshe hears and lives.
I felt the writing of it similar to a travle blog yet it was intriguing to read as the pace was fast and it kept me hooked. I also liked how none of the character names were given just their traits through which they were known. I also liked how the descriptions and details were kept to a minimum not making the book boring.
Pick this one up if you like travel stories and a bit of mystery too.
Review: Variety is the spice of life, isn’t it? I’m sure after a point, all of us get exhausted with the regular cycles of our lives. We all need an interlude, to maintain our mental stability. Everyone’s idea of a ‘break’ differs from each other. And there is no right or wrong here. It’s all about finding something where our soul, body and mind feel at ease. And for the protagonist of ‘Mountain Mist & Meghalaya’ authored by ‘Hanisha Raghunath’ and ‘Urvesh Bhatt’, it’s travelling.
The book along with the adventure loving protagonist take us on a unique journey of ‘Meghalaya’, the homeland of the wettest place of earth. The name ‘Meghalaya’ does true justice to the natural bounty of the region, as it means the ‘abode of clouds’ in Hindi. It lies in the north-east of India, a part of one of the acclaimed ‘Seven Sisters’ of the country.
Not just Meghalaya, but the entire north-eastern region is a wonderous jewel in the diadem of India. The unique culture and the natural grandeur of the state attracts the wanderlusty protagonist there. On this short solo trip of his, he runs into numerous interesting personas, who help him soak in the best of what Meghalaya has to offer.
The book has many distinctive features. Firstly, it has brushes of poetry in every chapter, making it a beautiful amalgamation of prose and poetry. Following, the book also shares the local folklore of the region, giving us an in depth insight of lifestyle, traditions and culture of the region.
It also throws light on the several social issues which the people of Meghalaya (and even the entire north-eastern region) face due to the insensitivity of tourists from the other parts of India.
Full of delightful descriptions, enchanting reveries, once-of-lifetime experiences and mysterious as well as classic tales, if you are looking for a bewitching mental globetrot around dreamy lands, this book is the one for you!
My honest opinion: Absolutely and madly fell in love with not just this story, but also the book! It is almost too-good-to-exist-and-be-read. Being someone who was bitten by the travel bug since god knows how long, reading this book was a heavenly way to spend my time. The articulation as well as the plotline is brilliant. Something I would surely want to re-read. And oh, you will surely have the word ‘environ’ hammered in your head after reading this (such high repitition could have been avoided, though). My desire to visit and the love for the north-east just increased ten folds after this read. Worth a perfect rating, hands down!
If you ask me what's my passion other than reading, my answer will be it's traveling. I love traveling and exploring new destinations. It thrills me whenever I plan for a travel trip to any destination, domestic or international. Traveling to new places gave me the scope, and privilege to know about the destination people, culture, and natural beauty. The moment I checked the title and cover Page of the book Mountain Mist & Meghalaya by Hanisha Raghunath & Urvesh Bhatt, trust me, I was sure this book is for me. My two passions, reading and traveling when blends together it gives me inner peace.
My verdict:
• Travelogue can be so interesting, and I got to know it only after reading this book. • I can visualize the natural beauty of the state of Meghalaya so well that I believe I can now guide a little to people who wish to explore this destination. • The style and narration used in writing this book turned out to be the key point that will make this book popular among travel lovers quite well. • The poetic lines in between the chapters increased my reasons to fall in love with this book. • Character development and inclusion in the story done brilliantly, and trust me I loved that. • For me, this book turned out to be a lesson. It will help me in reading the minds of people, and especially the travel lovers. In my school books, I read so much about Meghalaya. But I got to know so many other aspects like living root bridge, flok stories, culture, and many others from this book. If you are not a travel-loving person, just read this book, and I assure you will gain interest in traveling.
I just want to ask 1 question to authors Hanisha Raghunath & Urvesh Bhatt? What's your next destination to explore, and what will be the next travelogue we will get to read from you. I am eagerly waiting for the same.
From my end, the book gets a perfect score of 5 on 5, and my sincere wish is to see this book as a best seller real soon.
This book is about to explore places of Meghalaya. The protagonist is working for Media company in Mumbai and he is telling his experience of Meghalaya trip. There was lines that said "Sometimes researching about the places and reading their backdrop stories can lead to some fantastic horror visuals." so is happening with protagonist he is getting 5D dreams everytime and this is the interesting part of the book. There are three types of people we meet while travelling. First, are those who are eager to talk, you just need to give them a slight poke. Second, are those who are silent detectives and speak only if it's imperative. Third, are those who are shy to communicate but are good listeners. He met so many people in this entire journey and he described his experience with Meghalya people. How they treat him, from The first day cab driver to last day cab driver Meghalaya people are down to earth With every person who came to their places.
The reaserch of authors are remarkable, so neat and picture perfect. in this book they mentioned so many places like literally so many places, some of the places name i can't even Read/pronounced properly🤪. But there is story behind every scene, every place and also name of the places that why this place called by this name?? I picked up this book just by thinking that there must be mythological stories on places mentioned, and i guessed it right. The language of the book is lucid one can easily understand but some part of the stories want more of your attention just because name of the place or a person.
On the end note i want to grab your attention For second part of this book yessss there is charactors of travelling mother and son in this book and they are giving us a glimpse of second part of this book.
Overall this book is amazing read, I'm recommending this book to everyone, if you're travel addict or love to explore new places then this book is must read for you.
A beautiful tale of author's Journey from Mumbai to Meghalaya. The way even minute moments are captured, it feels as if we are travelling with the author on journey. The story starts with author's air travel from Mumbai to Meghalaya. How he is alone and scared to take a shared cab to reach shillong (We all would have gone through this kind of situation), any reader can relate through that. Somehow with courage he takes it and then make friends with the air force officer and the driver. Author beautifully describes the issue he faces on reaching Shillong whether the hotel mess or roaming around in the city at 2 am. It all feels real as if the reader is there with the person suffering. The Story then move forward with him finally getting the hotel and moving towards exploring the city. Amazing locations, beautiful sightseeing, he somehow connects with the ancient traditions of the city gets to know different local tales of the city. The local tribes and the way scenes created in the books are amazing. Whether the kid calling him airport uncle or describing the cleanest village in Asia, it all feels surreal and binds the reader and forces him to have a look at the state’s culture. His friendship with Kennedy, Prince and Prosidh was heartfelt. Their Kindness and Love was the highlight for me in the book. The story line was great, while reading I felt it was a kind of blog. In some portions I felt it was a bit slow but all and all I can say it was a great book for and would definitely recommend it to everyone.
Title : Mountain Mist & Meghalaya Authors : Hanisha Raghunath and Urvesh Bhatt Rating: 5/5 I can term this as a North East Indian Wonder. It is actually a dramatized geography of the state of Meghalaya. The reason for giving a 5 star is that, I have visited Meghalaya a few years back and got instantly connected with the book, as it was almost a rerun for me. All the places that I visited in Meghalaya almost came to life in front of me. A lot of detailing has been done while explaining the locations, the protagonist visits in Meghalaya on his solo trip. The description of the vivid culture, the friendly and helpful people, their cuisine, and many other cultural aspects of the local tribes makes the book interesting. The amalgamation of local folk lore with the geographical location makes it a fun read too. How a wary solo traveler enters into unknown territory where there is nothing like the metropolis, Mumbai where he comes from. The narrative inspires the reader to actually visit the North Eastern part of our beautiful country. The use of poetry in between enhances the reading experience. The authors have kept the grasp on the book by going into great detailing and their writing style makes the book quite interesting. The limited characters in the book does not hamper the narrative, actually it enhances it as more detailing is done on the beautiful locations. I feel there is no downside of the book. Kudos to the writers.
Book Review - Mountain Mist & Meghalaya by Hanisha Raghunath & Urvesh Bhatt
Reading this book was a treat for my soul, damn the pictures they created in my mind!
Storyline - This book is about the experiences of a traveller from Mumbai, who embarks on a solo journey to the abode of clouds, Meghalaya. The author takes us through his journey of bonding not just with the picturesque views that the place has to offer, but the connections he makes with the locals. His tumultuous journey with its highs and lows, together with the amazing storytelling that the author incorporated NY telling us the tales behind various traditions followed and the culture of Meghalaya.
What Stands Out - for me what stood out the most is how genuinely the protagonist seems to be exploring and sharing his journey, the way he builds his connection, the realities of life and of tourism across the nations, the description of the tranquillity of his travels. I even got emotional by the end of the book, where he is disheartened about leaving and the last day of his travels unfolding the relationships he has built.
Verdict - If you are a Traveller, then I suggest you give this book a read, the book speaks to you and will light that spark in your heart to definitely visit Meghalaya to experience all this yourself. The book touched my heart and awoke the traveller that has been resting due to the Pandemic within me.
Meghalaya, one of the most famous in our country and known especially for heavy rainfall is one of my favorite places to visit. ⠀ In my view both the authors did an exceptional job in this travelesque book that they created and put forward together. All the places that they mentioned here were very much detailed and explained in plain and simple terms, it feels like readers are currently on tour while reading these words. It really felt so surreal and good too.
“In the world where words are hard to decipher, they were composing pieces of poetry” ~ these beautiful lines from the book are now etched in my heart.
One funny instance while I came across reading was- how much people were charged for a boat ride in Dawki lake. It was hilarious for me because when I visited the same in 2019 with family, we were getting charged high rates too (1000 rs), it was ridiculous. But yes, after some careful and witty negotiions from my uncle, we finally took the ride for 500 rs, and same way author got it aroud 700 rs, a little bit respite from initial demand that is.
The book also gives us an insight about the tribe people and their approach to life. Meghalaya is also known for folklores, and how they influenced the lives surrounding them.
Even though we are now residing in modern times, these folklores are pretty much interesting, witty and very much interest piquing
Lyrical treat..Meghalaya First and foremost I will be planning my next trip to Meghalaya..obviously its influence of this book..I ll be the traveller mother..but solo..Writing is impeccable, mesmerizing and I don't have enough words to explain it..you travel through mountains, clouds, lakes, forests, roads, falls and inside stories beyond every location..history of people and places leave you spellbound.. The story about Diengiei tree is personally my favorite and the lesson given through this story that our desires and egos have made us to live materialistic life..we have lost our connection with nature which is around us and within us..similarly this book has multiple tales and stories about this mesmerizing place Meghalaya.. One more thing I love about this book is the poetic lines at the start and end of chapters..those line summaries you the feeling at that moment..and the chapter names...these days I don't know why authors don't name chapters..in this book you will find unique and intriguing titles... human nature always yearns for more..though through writing I was wandering on those roads and mountains yet I wished for the pictures of places mentioned ( though I googled while reading)...overall its lyrical and poetic treat to readers..especially traveler like me will be overwhelmed..
Quote from the book// “Nobody can manage time. It's time that manages us. It flows like a flowing river where you cannot touch the same water as it is never constant. Once we flow with it, things are smooth.”
“Mountain Mist & Meghalaya” is an extraordinary travelogue by the two authors Urvesh Bhatt Hanisha Raghunath. The book is about the traveling experience of the authors. The authors had beautifully penned their traveling journey to Meghalaya, Exploring new places in the mountains, connecting with new people, and knowing the ancient ritual of the North Eastern Region of India. The Plot is started with boarding a flight from there author who had started an adventures journey to Meghalaya and given every bit of detail from the river to Mountain View, sightseeing, visiting local and villages. The book contains eighteen chapters in every chapter there is poetry, one of the poetry I like the most is - “Here I fly to the land of dreams From the City of dreams My sixth sense tells me I am about to fall in love I am about to sway in dubiety.” The narrative of the fiction is wonderful, the authors have used simple language, well-paced and, the stories are so engaging and connecting you want to reread them every time. Moreover, a refreshing read edition.
Some books become your solace when you are struggling with your daily life. And, this book surely became one for me. I was on a social media break while reading it and frankly it was just the right decision as this book took me far far away from my mundane routine to the mist and mythical place called Meghalaya. I was so smitten by the book that I wished it never ended. Every word written took me back to memory lane when I visited Shillong with my family. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to explore as much as the author did but I still remember the loving people and their hospitality. While reading the book, I felt that I was present there looking at all the places through the author's eyes. It felt that I am myself travelling and looking at all the beautiful and enchanting places. What a brilliant read. I recommend it to all travel lovers. I am surely going to gift this book to my dad who himself loves to travel. Thank you so much for such an amazing book. I seriously cherished reading it.
The book at hand is quite well like the title of the book itself which expresses the requisite encounters and joys the author had on his trip to Meghalaya. Delving further, the book has been divided into 18 chapters. The book features many characters and the most interesting one remains to be of Kennedy who appears in the 4th chapter. Delving further, each of the chapter has within its domain a very detailed explanation of each and every moment thereby reflecting the plight of the author and the emotions which surfaced. In addition to the same, there are many instances where the climactic nature can be traced as can be traced in the 4th chapter whose title itself expresses a lot of what is to come The overall writing style cannot be considered as verbose but rather simple and dwelling upon the required details as are required for the readers to know and the combined effect of all of it makes this book a must read for someone who is willing to get an astounding reading experience
"Here I fly to the land of dreams From the City of dreams"
I am a person who loves to travel and I've always dreamt of travelling the world some day. Whenever I read travelogues it makes me both sad and happy. Sad for myself and happy for the people who got the chance to visit the place.
Mountain Mist & Meghalaya by Hanisha Raghunath & Urvesh Bhatt is a travelogue. There isn't much to talk about the story as the blurb pretty much explains everything. The writing style is simple and easy to read. The pacing of the book just makes everything better. I absolutely love the cover. This is a book that makes you want to visit the place. It's a quick read and I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to everyone.
A beautified dive into the beauty of Meghalaya and back. I've never visited the state but reading this has given enough insights which I'm gonna take into account when I do. Narration is very perpetual and takes you to a whole new level of travelogues. The story revolves around a man who is a traveling geek and loves to explore every little part of his journey. Being a part of the corporate world, his travels are his escape from his usual self. The story is in 1st person and deals with the happenings around our narrator. My favorite part of the book was poems now and then, they were icing on the cake and go very well with the description of beauties in Meghalaya.
Mountain mist and Meghalaya by Hanisha Raghunath and Urvesh Bhatt is a nice book in travelogue genre. This book depicts the beauty of Meghalaya, it's unseen beauty, mountains and the beautiful nature.
This book describes everything about the nice place Meghalaya in a very detailed manner. I like to read travelogues. This book gives the knowledge about the people out there, their culture, famous food and overall the incredible beauty of mountain views.
Such an interesting content as everyone loves traveling. I am in love with the narration. A very good work.
Understandable language. Title and cover are apt. Overall it was a very good read for me.
I have never enjoyed a travel book as much as this one! The author is a humble explorer - he visited the same places in Meghalaya in two days. His wanderlust soul was not satisfied with the richness of solitude, the vast expanse land of Meghalaya had provided: Now that's a heart-warming moment in the book. The author is so modest that he never failed to have meals with his driver, or his hotel staff. That is how stories are spun and memories are etched in the mind. One sets off with the author and Kennedy, his driver in quest for beautiful Meghalaya - the language is so lucid! We travel to the misty lands of Kongthong and Shnongpdeng; we even have a boat ride on the Wah Umngot river (the bargaining made me laugh out loud!). I was touched by how beautifully the author had portrayed the simple life of the local people who believe and live "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" in true terms. Instead of waiting for others to take the brunt, local people themselves have immense respect for nature and have taken it upon themselves to preserve the sanctity of the places.
Throughout reading the book, I kept searching for images of the places the author has visited. A few photographs would have been a treat for tired, daydreaming eyes! Also, the airport woman and child story was a bit unnecessary from a travel point of view - at places, rather I felt she was piling on and offering unsolicited advice. Anyhow, I think that is how the author had encountered that particular woman.
Looking forward to more books by Urvesh Bhatt and Hanisha Raghunath!
