David J. Ridges taught for the Church Educational System for thirty-five years. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University and taught adult religion and Know Your Religion classes for BYU Continuing Education and spoke at BYU Campus Education Week for many years.
Ridges has served as a curriculum writer for Sunday School, seminary, and institute of religion manuals. His callings in the Church include Gospel Doctrine teacher, bishop, stake president, and patriarch. He and his wife, Janette, have served two full-time Church Educational System missions. They are the parents of six children and are enjoying a growing number of grandchildren. They reside in Springville, Utah.
I love David Ridge's scripture commentary books. I like how he includes the scripture text and then links the reader to other awesome content. Here is a cool quote he links to D&C 138: "D&C 138 is powerful. Here is a super cool quote from Joseph Smith: “When you climb a ladder, you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top; and so it is with the principles of the Gospel—you must begin with the first, and go on until you learn all of the principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have passed through the veil before you will have learned them. It is not all to be comprehended in this world; it will be a great work to learn our salvation and exaltation even beyond the grave.”
The actual Doctrine and Covenants still gets 5 stars from me, and the additional insights provided by David Ridges gets 3 stars. There was enough helpful content to keep me using the book, but in truth much of the Doctrine and Covenants is straightforward so needed a lot less explanation than other scriptures, such as the New Testament. I recommend these "Made Easier" volumes for someone studying the Doctrine and Covenants for the first time or someone that hasn't studied much of church history. Ridges provides context and simple explanations without getting in the way of the actual scriptural text or overwhelming the reader with too much info.
David Ridges' study guides have been an INCREDIBLE help for me! I was missing out on some much, but didn't even know it until I started reading these guides. He covers histories of people mentioned, the Church's history, doctrine, word definitions, parables, comparisons with other scriptures, including JST, and more! All within the context of each section.
I have used David Ridge's commentaries for the last couple of years of Come Follow Me, and I have been very blessed by Brother Ridge's work on these books. I highly recommend them!
