When an EMP brings the United States to its knees on Halloween, Lance Cooper must rescue his family and fight to survive amid the terror descending upon the city.
Wow what a great book. You are so right on when you talk about this type event. This is more possible than anyone thinks possible. I highly recommend reading. You made me think.
This had a lot of potential, even with the fairly common starting plot of a disaster while a family is in different locations. Sadly, it suffered from a lot of unbelievable parts of the story. First, we have the drug warlord that has a grudge against one of the main characters (way too common and usually distracting from the story of surviving a disaster), and even though he is a vicious killer, he gets out of prison after only 12 years? Somehow he is able to find the members of this family, over and over. Somehow, the ex-soldiers, ex-attorney and two teenage boys are able to overcome, thwart and even kill the warlord's security repeatedly. One teenager is able to do so several times all by himself. The small city where they live seems to go downhill very, very fast and the cops appear to be helpless. Jane has taken a first aid course (as good mothers often do), and is somehow able to do surgery and transfusions on her son. That was one good first-aid class. The first soldiers that the escaping family encounter are mad that some of their troops were killed by the gang members, yet are comfortable deciding to execute two men and a teenage boy and brutalize a woman and teenage girl. That is so incredibly unlikely that the story lost me at that point, though I managed to finish it.
How did El Diablo keep finding them? His gang got them in pure darkness after the EMP which no one foresaw, the older boy coming out of a party, the younger boy and the mom walking from the mall. He found them in a cabin in the woods. Did that one have a road sign to it ??? Why did the mom crawl back out the window at the vet's? Why not just walk out the door? How does a known, vicious criminal get sent to prison with three life sentences get out in twelve years for good behavior? Prison officials that stupid? The list goes on. I love EMP stories, having read at least a dozen Most seem well thought out; this one felt like it was written and published with no editing.
I thought this book would have an interesting plot, and it did. The prison escapade did go a little long, but it was broken up by alternating cuts to the other characters and locations. The writing needed a couple more drafts. The technical details of the big EMP event were thin, and the writer gave one paragraph to the start of WW3. The dialogue is the biggest problem, especially with the younger characters. I also spotted quite a few typos. Here’s hoping any future volumes from this writer are a bit cleaner.
I’m now editing to say that the other reviews here describe a different book than the one I read! The chief villain in my book was Hugo the Nazi, not El Diablo.
This is a story of a family dealing with an EMP and they have to survive. I liked that it happened on Halloween. It is a preppers dream. Oh no a world without electricity and all that goes with it. But I enjoyed the characters and I enjoyed the way the story was written. It was a good story, but the whole survival thing is not for me, I would not have survived. The book was good and it was interesting. I did enjoy some parts more than others.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Cabin in the Woods by Robert Walker is a fantastic story that I have had the privilege to read and give an honest review. This is book number twenty-three in this fantastic series that I have been hooked on since the beginning. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about thrillers and suspense stories.

Exciting story of survival against tremendous odds after an an EMP attack.
I read many similar books on this subject which even though I sincerely hope this never happens but fear it may be only a matter of when and who does this to us. The story is very well written and all of the characters are well developed to the point I find myself cheering them on while hoping that they eliminate the evil gang members .Can't wait to read the sequel. Thanks for the entertainment!
I've been reading all the EMP series of books. I enjoyed this one much more than the others. Yes, an EMP hits and chaos ensues. But, the history of the people involved in this book gave a very good new perspective! Don't want to give anything away, but having a war veteran or two in your group post-EMP provides some excellent advantages.
I enjoyed this story, but it honestly felt rushed, almost like a long movie trailer. I wanted more: more info about the characters' backstories, more info about what was going on with other people. This felt like brief shots of the story, intending to get the reader excited to read the many other stories connected to this one. It was a fun, brief and slightly unsatisfying short novel. Please give us more.
I only gave 2 stars because the author used the f word instead of being more creative at showing the evil of some of the characters. Basically the story was good.
Absolutely fantastic read. It was a totally believable story. The characters are so real. The evil ones were completely evil. I would recommend this book to anyone. Thank you for this truly remarkable and believable story.
God read, wished was a bit longer but I'm just being greedy. Good characters, decent amount of action and surprises. Recommend for all who delve in this genre. Also great editing, no misspelled words that I caught and no mix up of characters.
I really enjoyed this book. It is very different from what I usually read, but I couldn't put it down. The characters are interesting and the story is scarily believable.
A really good story, I love it! I thought that this was the first in a series but I found that it is actually #24 in a series, but none of the books have anything to do with any other books in the series, which is too bad.
Story line was very good and intense. HOWEVER, the language was horrible. There are a lot of people who enjoy good stories and appreciate clean language. I won't be reading any more from this author.
This book was engrossing from start to finish. It grabbed my attention right away and shows the benefit of preparation. I recommend this book to any future thinking person. Just imagine!
As I have said before each EMP novel is different and this one is no exception. Well thought out and written, I liked the author's take on this subject. Good guys, bad guys and only one can survive. Happy reading!
I liked it, great characters. Didn't appreciate the vulgarity directed to the females, don't think it was necessary at all. If this is indicative of his writing, this was my first and last book of his.
Too unbelievable. Too many out of the world coincidences. Finished the book, but too much that I just couldn't swallow. Very disappointed. Too much blood and gore, too little storyline.
The book held my attention all the way to the end. I wish there was a second book that would take me back to the cabin in the woods. An excellent read.
The book shows how everyone must work together to over come adversity. I feel sorry for those who do not live in the rural areas. Cities are the death trap!
