Have you ever wondered about lesser-known dinosaurs? Do you ever wonder if there are some strange ones that you might not have ever heard of or imagined your own new and exciting ones? The Awkward Dinosaurs by Kellen Roggenbuck is a humorous and delightful picture book that children and adults will be able to laugh and giggle at. Each page introduces a previously unheard-of dinosaur with an awkward personality or physical trait. One thing these dinosaurs do not lack is self-confidence. They are all happy with who they are and how they look.

Author and illustrator Kellen Roggenbuck has created a picture book that will capture the interests of babies just learning to look at pictures to adults that want good clean humor. I genuinely laughed as I read through this children’s book. Shyladon is probably my favorite dinosaur in this collection. I love how just because he isn’t a fan of large crowds, he is fine and not ashamed of this. Children will have no trouble finding a dinosaur in this book that they can relate to and appreciate.

The awkward dinosaurs teach young children that being different is okay and something to be proud of. If you are different and stand out from a group of friends, that is not bad; everyone is unique, even if they think it is awkward at first, like glowing in the dark or being plaid.

The Awkward Dinosaurs is a magical picture book that would make a wonderful gift for young children just getting interested in books as the bright colors, and entertaining illustrations will keep them engaged. It would also be a great addition to a kindergarten or preschool classroom to help teach and celebrate diversity.

It seems like every kid goes through a dinosaur phase. Some never leave it and we call those people paleontologists. Dinosaur movie and dinosaur books abound, but none are quite like Kellen Roggenbuck’s The Awkward Dinosaurs. With tongue-in-cheek humor, simple yet vibrant illustrations, and a dash of whimsy, Roggenbuck lists a few of the lesser-known dinos. The ones who don’t get all the press. The ones who are, well, awkward.

Distracticus tinius is a small yellow dinosaur that has a hard time paying attention.
Selfiestickadon is an orange T-rexesque creature constantly taking pictures.
Sneeziesnotus is always sneezing.

You get the idea. Roggenbuck’s clever wordplay and colorful illustrations make this a book that’s appropriate for a range of ages. Little ones may just enjoy the pictures and respond to prompts about identifying colors or patterns. Older ones can read (or be read to) and laugh at the absurdity of it all.

A case could be made that The Awkward Dinosaurs extends the joke a bit too long at thirteen different dino-types and some jokes stick better than others. But…maybe I’m thinking that because my kids always want to read it all the way through. (Which is a win for Roggenbuck, I imagine.)

The Awkward Dinosaurs wraps up with a message that it’s okay to not be as well-known or popular and that being yourself is the best you can be. It’s a fun, colorful book perfect for the young dinosaur lover in your life.

This book was goofy and fun. The characters in the book were fresh and relateable, and everyone in the family found the book to be a delight to read. We found this book through a previous work by author Kellen Roggenbuck and this was a true gem. The Awkward Dinosaurs is the perfect book for a young person, especially if you are a dinosaur lover. It's got great illustrations and a fantastic message that children should learn early on.

This is a hidden gem of kids literature for sure! I stumbled across a Facebook post about the book and bought it on a whim - it is the best new book I've read in a long time! It's funny for all ages and we end up reading it 3-4 times a week in our house. I'm not sure why more people don't know about this book, but it's well worth the read. You will love it!
