As the only known survivor of a horrific massacre years earlier, Molly Hastings has rebuilt her life as a dedicated member of the Anberlin sentries. It's her job to protect and police the supernatural citizens who call the town home, but the discovery of several bodies has put everyone on edge with no suspect in sight.
Further complicating matters are a call from the home she left behind and the sudden arrival of a werewolf motorcycle club with ties to her past. An unexpected ally is found in Parker Hayes, a hunter facing down his own demons and searching for a future not based in bloodshed, who inspires feelings she hasn't felt in years.
Amidst the clash between her past and present, Molly finds herself questioning everything she knows about not only those she's meant to protect but the Sentries themselves. Could everything she's been taught be a lie, and if it is, can she protect those she cares about?
Although this book does take place in the Anberlin world of my original trilogy, it can be read as a stand-alone book.
Valerie Evans has had an interest in writing since she was a kid, though it wasn't until 2012 that she began The Anberlin Chronicles which is her first published work. She's a fan of multiple genres, including fantasy, fairy tales, horror, and chick lit which she likes to incorporate as inspiration for her own works. Presently she lives in Georgia with a very lethargic dog and an ever-growing collection of Funko Pops. Join her on Instagram as thevalerieevansauthor or pinterest as valerie0349 where you can see graphics and quotes, inspirations, and get a heads-up for future projects!
The way the book starts is veiled with mystery and leaves you with questions. That's a great way Valerie Evans found to get you hooked and keep reading. I really liked Molly as a main character and she is also depicted in the cover which by the way is amazing!! It's a short book, I finished it in two days and if I wouldn't have been busy I would have finished it in one since the story is easygoing and fast. It touches subjects as grief and the loss of a loved one and how people deal with it. What I most liked about this book is that it portrays realistic characters who have flaws and are not by any means perfect. I would suggest it to fantasy lovers since it's a great example of urban fantasy/paranormal romance.
Of Spells and Fur by Valerie Evans is a wonderful story that I have read. This is book number one in this wonderful series and it can be read by itself. I am so hooked on this series and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fantasy and paranormal romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
*Le sigh* Before I can even truly get into reviewing this book I have to say AGAIN, this book is part of a series and that information was not readily apparent. So, I picked it up without knowing it was part of a series, and without having read the previous books. I am SO SICK of having this happen! I’d guess this is probably book 4 of The Anberlin Chronicles. Maybe the author will call it a spin-off but it read like a book 4 to me. It is readable on its own, but you definitely feel that you are missing past information and investment in characters.
Outside of that one big detraction, I thought this was pretty sweet. I liked that The hero and heroine were both full adults, no chosen teenagers here. The inclusion of parenthood was a nice change. The fact that XXX let YYY take the lead in most decisions was appreciable and I thought the plot interesting. I did think the author took the disappointingly predictable easy out with the ex-husband and I had really hoped for something more/better. But the moral dilemma he presented was an interesting one up until that point.
I read an Advanced Readers’ Copy, which usually comes to reviewers pre-final edits. So, I can’t speak to the copy editing. But, there was a habitual simplicity that popped up noticeably and could have been addressed and smoothed out. Sentences like, “A nod was given with her words…” “A pause was made beside a tree while…” “A pause was taken to lean back in…” “A mental checklist was gone through…” “A deep breath was taken before…” “A bit of water was poured into the cup beside the bed before…” “A final check was done on Natalie before…” “A purple crayon was removed before…” “A question was raised about desert…” “A pause was made to drop off…” I imagine you get the point. The repetition of this particular sentence structure to move scenes alone was hard to ignore.
All in all, however, I liked the book enough to be interested in going back and reading the series from the beginning.
Molly thought that after losing her husband and leaving her newborn to mainly stay with her sister would keep her safe. When Molly’s sister dies she has to become the full time mom. Molly is also a Sentry. A Sentry works in the field like a detective, only with Witches, Werewolves, Vampires and Demons. People and creatures are turning up dead and at first it seems to be the work of the biker werewolves that Molly fears, for they are the ones who killed her husband, or so she thought, Sons of Chaos. While trying to figure out why and how her husband is still alive after all these years and figure out who is truly doing the murders, Molly finds happiness with the least expected person, Parker. Once they get through the formalities Molly and Parker start getting along better and getting to know each other and helping each other out. Molly has many friends that range from humans to Vampire, Werewolves etc and they all help her to solve this mystery.
It took a minute for the book to get going. Once it did though it kept me guessing who did what. The only thing I would have liked to have known more on is Isa, more background story because the way the book started and the reasoning for Isa was a little off for me. Otherwise it was pretty good. The ending is like a true ending not all fairy tale which is good. Can’t wait for book 2.
Evans' strength is character development. She's built a world of supernatural beings ranging from witches, werewolves, and vampires to the lesser known darachs. I recommend reading the Anberlin Chronicles first because you will have a much richer experience understanding the expertise of each of the minor characters, and it makes it more enticing to learn the history behind all the mysteries. I love watching the journey of the different families, and getting a peek at the secretive ones. Many times I found myself grasping for clues, only to learn about new legendary creatures and their unusual powers. It was so much fun to learn about unexpected lore in this tale. New creatures and solving mysteries, does it get any better for a reader?
I chose this book because I have read others by this amazing author. She definitely does not disappoint. Another great book. Can't wait to start another amazing adventure.
I cannot say if this book is good or not. The book relies on readers having read the previous books by this author, despite not being labeled as part of a series.
