Rate this book
Get inside the head of one of the most compelling entrepreneurs of our time with this collection of quotes from global business icon Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX.

Elon Musk, the South African-born entrepreneur who made his first fortune with Internet companies such as PayPal, has risen to global prominence as the visionary CEO of both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, two companies with self-proclaimed missions to improve life as we know it and better secure the future of humanity.

Now, the most insightful, thought-provoking, and revealing quotes from this entrepreneurial engineer have been compiled into a single book. Elon In His Own Words is a comprehensive guide to the inner workings of the man dubbed "the real Tony Stark." Hundreds of his best quotes, comprising thoughts on business, clean energy, innovation, engineering, technology, space, electric vehicles, entrepreneurship, life lessons, and more, provide an intimate and direct look into Silicon Valley's most ambitious industrialist.

Even with no prior experience in the complex, ultra-high-barrier-of-entry automotive and space industries, Musk has excelled. Tesla, the first successful American car startup in more than 90 years, received more than 325,000 reservations for its economical Model 3 in a single week—advancing the company’s cause to accelerate the advent of sustainable via affordable, reliable electric vehicles. SpaceX, the first private company to launch, orbit, and recover a rocket and dock at the International Space Station, has drastically reduced the cost of launching and manufacturing reusable spacecraft, which the company sees as the first step toward its "ultimate goal" of making life multiplanetary. In the words of Richard Branson, "Whatever skeptics have said can’t be done, Elon has gone out and made real."

Newly updated and repackaged from its original publication in 2017 as Rocket Elon Musk In His Own Words , this book curates Musk quotes from interviews, public appearances, online postings, company blogs, press releases, and more. What emerges is a 'word portrait' of the man whose companies' swift rise to the top will undoubtedly keep their status-quo competitors scrambling to keep up.

I define Musk as the guy behind the endeavors of SpaceX, Tesla and a sole dreamer of multiplanetary species. I usually put the Twitter business aside when I'm advocating for Musk. And the words in this book will tell you why.

I've found Elon awe-inspiring for many years. The first time I became acutely aware of him was sometime in the late 2000s, when I read on wikipedia that he was the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, among other achievements. To lead even one of those companies is astounding, but both? I knew there had to something extra special about this man.

Since those years, I've found Elon to be consistent in his views and his actions. His fundamental aims in all that he does is to leave the world a better place than when he entered it. For Tesla, it's sustainability; for SpaceX, it's making human life multi-planetary, or in his words "human consciousness" multi-planetary. Why? Because if we don't, our extinction is inevitable. So, why wouldn't we at least endeavor to not let this happen? How much do we care about our species, about humanity?

And now, these days, Elon's latest swing has been taking over X, formerly Twitter. Most likely, this has been his most controversial move, and I find it disappointing to see so many people turn on him. The whole point of Twitter was to give anyone a voice; not to weed out anyone if they disagree with you. Some claim that it's 'fascist', when really the opposite is true. Another question I had was, 'will this work out for him'? Elon himself even says: "If something's important enough, you should try. Even if the probable outcome is failure." (March 30, 2014) And I haven't even mentioned SolarCity, the boring company, and other endeavors. He clearly believes all of his ventures are important, and he feels it's for a greater good.

In this book, "In His Own Words", it's quite clear to see just what Elon's view towards humanity and the future is. This collection of ideas from him is a great way to better understand his position: his morality and ethics, as well as his existential views of humanity. He fundamentally wants the best for humanity going forward, and in turn, perhaps part of his legacy will inspire more to think big and to fuel the human spirit.

In his last quote of the book, he says: "I think what matters is the actions, not what people think of me in the future. I'll be long dead. But the actions that I take, will they have been useful?" (December 12th, 2015)

His philosophy is applicable to anyone. We could all strive to be useful, no matter what it is we're contributing. I would also include part of his view on raising kids, in that "I certainly hope they will work very hard. I believe they should be productive contributors to society...in some way, add more than they take from the world." (August 4th, 2007) It's fair to say we could all strive to do this.

Time will determine how history will view Elon. His impact has been so enormous already, it's kind of exciting to see what's coming next. After all, he's not dead yet; he'll hopefully have many years left in him.

I am the shipwreck with its scattered and soaked wood littering the ocean like a nest of roaches.
The water smothers me patiently, and it waits to feel my body on the ocean floor.
I am the captain.
I stand on my ship, never leaving its side, for tonight I sleep in a shark's stomach.
The tears and rain both hit my face, as I lay on the deck and wait to drown.
I am the thunder, I am the storm.
Hear me roar as I deafen all.
I conduct my orchestra as loud as possible and conclude with a violent smash.
I am washing the splinters from within my heart and I scream as it pumps.
I let my lungs fill with water as the broken bath tub leaks.
