1920's Mexico and the American Southwest hold many dangers, as the last Apache strongholds persist against the foreign invaders. Hard as nails, Confederate serviceman Jock MacNeil receives an unexpected invitation to guide runaways from a reservation to a stronghold in Sierra Madre. Facing both Mexican and American authorities, and the Apache Wars raging around them, Jock witnesses first-hand the terrors of war, and his own transformation from a man of faith to Apache spirituality.
A 'Last of the Mohicans' style story which is quite successful in evoking the time and place in which it is set. Told in flashbacks over the protagonists eight decades, this is a seemingly well researched work. I didn't feel a great deal of empathy for the lead character who is as brutal as his antagonist but perhaps this was the author's intent. As a reader from N. Ireland, I was also intrigued by the preoccupation with religion throughout and picked up on an undercurrent of secterianism. There are references to "demented Irishmen" and being "lumped in with the Catholic Irish". Reading the book I wondered if this spoke more of the author's background than the world he was attempting to inhabit. It's a brief read and enjoyable enough.
A moving story about a Scottish immigrant who becomes an Apache warrior. The story is set in the 20th Century, but transitions back and forth in time. Jock is in his late 70’s, the leader of a renegade band of Chiricahua who live in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Jock makes a pilgrimage to visit the grave of his wife and family who were killed by scalp hunters many years before when he comes into conflict with White Eyes(white soldiers from the US). It is fast paced story of warfare, but also of the faith and resilience of the Apache people.
As always Jim has obviously studied his subject matter well. This book gives an enjoyable fictional account of Apaches through the wars with America and Mexico. In doing so historical figures mix with our fictitious heroes. There is gritty realism with how the Apaches lived interwoven with the mythical and spiritual beliefs of the people. An amazing journey from the 1860s to 1927, taking us from 'Westburn' to the south west of America. Well done Jim.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review. The imagery is amazing. The powerful wording brings the reader into the life and struggle of the Apache. One warrior's life told in story; one warrior's power brought by the She-wolf; one warrior's drive to save his band of people. Enter the life of Jock MacNeil & be charged by the experience. Highly recommended.
Excellent history. I felt as though I was there with the characters. I'm hoping Mr. Ellis will be authoring more historical novels about the American Indian trials with the white eyes. As a white man, it saddens me to think we destroyed the way of life of this noble people.
This is a good read. You can’t help but want to pick up a rifle and join in. I have always marveled at the Indian ability to run like these did. The same was true of the Tribes around the Great Lakes who were woods runners. Many of our Long Hunters who explored what would become Kentucky could also. Give it a try. I think you’ll enjoy it!
I read this all in one go, and I'm tempted to look up the history to see if something like this actually happened. Bad punctuation with lots of misplaced commas made for slower reading though.
Excellent historical novel about the mistreatment of the American Indian. One of the saddest parts of our nation's history, second only to the Civil War. Good portrayal of the battle from the perspective of the Native Americans.
i'm no doctoral candidate but have read enough of native American history in my last 50 years to know this was researched well Characters a d their backgrounds were on spot Thanks, it was a wonderful read
Good story line but dragged a bit. Moving back & forth during various phases of Jock's life required a bit of backtracking to understand what time period author was describing.
I enjoyed this wonderful book enormously. Would highly recommend. Must look at the author’s other works because this book was so interesting and well written.
