Meet the Grumblies. All they do is ARGUE! So when a huge, hungry GOBBLESTOMP arrives in their village, which little Grumbly will banish the beast? A laugh-out-loud story about teamwork.
Librarian's note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. This is John^^^Kelly.
John Kelly is an illustrator, writer and designer who has worked for Scholastic, Macmillan, Hodder, Simon & Schuster, Aardman animation, Lucasfilm, Radar pictures and many others. He has been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway prize twice (Guess Who's Coming For Dinner and Scoop!). The Beastly Pirates is his first picture book for Bloomsbury.
It's hard to know exactly where to start with how awful I find this book. It was not a fun story to read-out loud, the illustrations aren't interesting to look at, and my toddler just isn't interested at all. We've made a few attempts at reading this book and my daughter always wanders off early on to find a different book.
I also personally dislike the decision to call the mammoth a "gobblestomp" because it felt really condescending towards children. Though I admit my general displeasure with the book has me looking for causes as I'd probably have enjoyed it under any other circumstances.
