Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2021 gives us "more". More exciting short stories written true to pulp form. Like the previous volume these stories are exiting, bold, to the point, and often have an exploitive twist you wont see coming.
Editor Robert Greenberger has amassed an array of talented writers-some returning, some new-who together create tales that would make a 40's newsstand blush!
While Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2021 offers more of the same great storytelling, there are a few things that set this edition apart from it's 2019 predecessor.
First, this edition offers many new writers who make excellent contributions. Secondly, this volume is bigger, giving the reader more bang for their buck.
I was especially happy there were more offerings in the Sci-Fi, Mystery, and Occult categories. Most importantly though, the quality of the storytelling is still top notch.
Here are some of the stories I really enjoyed -
Scott Pearson gets us started with "The Day It Came from Beyond Outer Space". This is a fun spirited, youthful, sci-fi tale about a group of kids who find a UFO. Kind of a Stand By Me meets War of the Worlds.
"The Shadow Lady of Docktown" is an excellent sci-fi tale of a heroine who uses light and shadow to fight crime and exploitation in a futuristic city. Author Kelli Fitzpatrick has created a very likable, working class hero with the Shadow Lady and I would read more stories about her.
Paige Daniels' "Quake" is a thoroughly entertaining follow up to Yarn 2019's "Opium Dreams". This tale gives writer investigator Molly Maloy another mystery to solve on her home turf of a ravaged San Francisco. "Quake" also sets Ms. Maloy up for more adventures, which I look forward to.
In the sweat and blood soaked, "Fiasco", we follow a wounded detective whose on the run after being set up. Author David Mack's entry is a mini-noir-masterpiece with razor sharp tension and suspense.
In Ron Marz's western, "Old Bull", we follow an aging bounty hunter as he attempts to collect on an unwanted buffalo. I found this tale to be both sentimental and poignant.
"Hamburger Kiss" is a time spanning romance which takes a good look at how relationships change, for better or worse, over time. Robert Greenberger's likable characters and romantic build up made for an enjoyable read.
In "Hell Dogs of Eldorado Canyon" we go on a nightmarish journey out west with 'Sorter' Red MacGill. Red's a sort of old west ghost hunter, trying to solve the murder of several miners. The tension in this story mounted with every paragraph and I felt like I was reading an old west version of Kolchak the Night Stalker!
The writers have really let their creative juices flow with Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2021. The end result is a sequel that stands up to or even surpasses it's predecessor.
There's alot to choose from in this volume, and they're all great choices!

4 Stars: Easily Recommended
This is a fantastic anthology, filled with well-written stories by a variety of authors, and, despite the title, a variety of genres. Yes, these ARE "thrilling adventure yarns," but between these covers, you get sci-fi, westerns, sword and sorcery, fantasy, romance, and more! I will be seeking out the first volume (which I missed out on when it came out) for sure.
