Israeli author Yaffa Feigin-Reich earned her degree in Political Science from Bar Ilan University and worked as a journalist for French and Israeli institutions in France before returning to Israel as correspondent for L’aurore Daily. She has served as a ghost writer, a translator, and has published a children’s book a detective novel, and now a romance – IT’S NOT TOO LATE FOR LOVE – a touching novel dealing with romance in the senior years! Se proudly shares her age as being eighty-four!
Novels and television series and films – and of course, the social media – are inundated with tales of romance involving the baby boomers and other young couples. Yaffa takes a refreshing stance in writing a novel love story about seniors in their 80s, and in doing so not only provides a new perspective to love affairs, but also celebrates the ‘golden years’ by initiating memorable thoughts about the romance arena.
Opening her novel with a reflective moment, Yaffa writes: ‘December 21, 2018. I’m sitting alone at the Aroma café, facing the arrival’s gate at the Ben Gurion airport, waiting for him to arrive. Me, an 82-year-old woman, in the throes of an amazing process of love and sexuality, waiting as a disposable cup of fragrant coffee is placed in front of me. He arrived on the 22 El Al flight form JFK. The flight has already landed. He is going to walk through the entrance gate any minute now, the man whom I refer to as the “Love of My Life.” The Love of My Twilight Years…’ And then in a similar moment we meet the male figure, in another year, another place, and the story ignites.
Yaffa has condensed the novel well: ‘When you follow your heart, it’s never too late for love. At the age of 82, Shosh wants more from life. Three years after losing her husband Alex, she understands that she deserves to experience exciting and fulfilling love, despite her advanced age. She meets and quickly confides in Mike, without knowing anything about his past about his relationship with her late husband. The love that sparks between them swiftly becomes a rollercoaster of dazzling passion and an extremely wild love life, accompanied by fractures of doubt and concerns that slowly come to light. She begins to doubt Mike and tries to keep her distance, but at the same time loves him desperately and needs him by her side. Will Shosh and Mike manage to overcome the abyss that has opened between them?’
Delightful writing, very fine character development, and a welcome nod to senior romance, this novel should find a wide audience – a way to understand the full prism of love.
