Best of the Dave Hunter series - there are actually two parts: part 1 is like the movie Die Hard with Dave holding off a band of about a dozen cutthroat bandits in the Sonora Desert while his partner Ash Mawson and a young blind girl escape with a treasured religious statue. He kills the bandits one by one until only 4-5 are left, then he escapes. Part 2 is like the movie Yellow Sky with Dave and Ash trapped in the village when the remnants of the bandit gang creep in during darkness and a gunfight in total darkness ensues. Dave and Ash kill all of the bandits, but they are both gravely wounded. The next day they recover and leave the villagers safe and still in possession of their treasure.

Lots of religious references with some of the narrow escapes from death attributed to divine intervention. But both Dave and Ash profess to be agnostics.
