I Hunt by Night

Rate this book
My name is Lucas Barrett. I was human, once, and lived the normal life of a bartender in New Orleans. Then I met Justin and everything changed. Now I'm a vampire and I detest humans. Am I jealous of them? Perhaps, but it's more than that. To me they're vermin infesting the world and I intend to do what I can to eliminate them. Of course I need to be careful. If I'm caught, I'll be declared a rogue and every vampire will have me in their sights. I am careful, or so I thought, until Axel appeared. He's also a vampire, and sexy as hell. It seems he's been watching me when I go out to hunt. Luckily for me, he feels the same about the humans or I'd be dead now. Truly dead. The attraction is there, and our shared desire to do something about the humans. Can we succeed without being caught and destroyed? Only time will tell.

Born and bred Cleveland, I earned a degree in technical theater, later switched to costuming, and headed to NYC. Finally seeing the futility of trying to become rich and famous in the Big Apple, I joined VISTA—Volunteers in Service to America—ending up in Chicago for three years. Then it was on to Denver, where I put down roots and worked as a costume designer until I retired in 2007.

I began writing a few years ago after joining an online fanfic group. Two friends and I then started a group for writers, where they could post any story they wished, no matter the genre or content. Since then I've been writing for publication. My first book came out in February of 2011. Most, but not all, of my work is M/M, either mildly erotic or purely 'romantic'. More often than not it involves a mystery or action/adventure, and is sometimes paranormal as well.

Edward Kendrick delivers an interesting look at Lucas Barrett a very angry vampire!

This wasn’t what Lucas Barrett wanted when he met Justin. But now he has no way out of becoming a vampire. He’s locked into living at Justin’s mansion until he becomes a true fledging. But no matter the comfort, Lucas is angry deep down inside and Justin doesn’t seem to care.

Completing his year and now a fledgling it’s time for Lucas to leave the home of Justin. Lucas is still angry and goes about establishing his life making some very serious errors along the way. If he keeps up the errors he could very well be considered a rogue vampire and draw the eyes of other vampires to suffer a painful death.

Lucas doesn’t know that he’s being watched very carefully by Axel McLeod. Axel pretty much saves Lucas from making anymore mistakes and they become more connected as they team up. But times are still tough out there for vampires and when they witness a crime committed by rogues they have to make a very important decision.

Edward Kendrick creates a quick read, suspenseful vampire story with a look into vampires being good and bad. He takes Lucas through some horrible times and most of all the reality that Justin is very self-centered. I really felt sorry for Lucas and wanted him to do better, so Axel was a good addition to the story.

I liked the secondary characters: Roland, who turned out to be a surprise and caught me off guard. Edina “Dina” Sarisbury is quite an exciting character and brings some interesting moments to this tale.

It’s always interesting to read a variety of vampire stories and this one has just the right amount of scary and twists!

3.5 stars Mixed thoughts for this one.
A fast paced story of Lucas starting life as a vampire. The first half of the novella was okayish although includes alot of killing (not my fav to read). I thought the story needed a prelude or something similar at the start introducing the charactors. He meets Axel the story gets intresting after that.

Lucas never thought he be turned in a vampire.. Justin showin him the ropes was now his master.

I am tempted to call this novella a life story, but since we are dealing with vampires here, it is only part of a lifetime, perhaps even a very short part of a lifetime. It begins with a young man named Lucas Barrett getting bitten by a vampire one dark night. The bitter is Justin and he isn't gay, but he is lonely so he wants a descendent for companionship for a year. Lucas stays with him for a year and then is out on his own.

He moves from New Orleans to Denver where he continues his career of bartending in a gay club. He feeds on people, but of course is careful not to kill anybody until his new hatred for human beings reach a breaking point, then he starts of a crusade to drain and kill drug dealers or just people that are arrogant jerks who use other people. Finally, he meet sAlex and they start a duo with a mission.

Finally, they meet a couple of interesting older vampires who still enjoy working in the world and paying attention. One o them is over 1000 years old, and she redirects them to another way of dealing with their anger that gets the bad guys without a bunch of dead bodies left everywhere.

The story is not very exciting. That was the one problem I had with it and why it only got 3 stars. The writing seemed a bit dry and if I were to recommend it, it would only be because it "shows" that even vampires can live almost "ordinary" lives.
