Introduction to Programming Using C++

Rate this book
The book introduces the learner to the fundamental concepts, principles and logic used in programming as well as the skills of programming the computer. The emphasis of the book is thus not to teach the C++ language, but C++ is only used as the implementation tool. Thus, the programming knowledge one acquires is reusable in the other languages. Also, the learner acquires knowledge of the features of the C++ language. At the end of the book, the learner should be able to; • Describe the concepts, principles, and logic of programming. • Describe the features of C++ language. • Use C++ to write computer programs to solve real-world problems. • Reuse the computer programming knowledge and skills acquired in programming using the other programming languages. The learner just needs to study on his own an overview of the general syntax of those other languages. The book is meant for; • Students of universities and colleges who are new to programming. • Also, due to its simplicity, the book can still be used by high school students who are studying computer programming. • People who have already learnt programming in procedural style (e.g. Pascal, C), and want to learn object oriented programming. In this case, C programmers should study sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, and then jump and resume from Chapter 8. Why should you read this book? • The book is written in a simplified way. It was written with the principle of ‘ease of understanding’ at the back of the mind of the author. This is ensured by use of simple language, direct and straight forward explanations, real world examples, illustrations, good organization (e.g. deeper subtopics), as well as incremental delivery of content (thus good flow). • The learner is also introduced on how to write algorithms for designing computer programs, thus further aiding understanding, besides preparing the learner also for system analysis work. • Thorough basics accompanied by plenty of flowing examples are provided throughout the chapters so as to ensure that the learner acquires a strong comprehension of computer programming. • There are exercises at the end of each chapter as well as self review questions that are very useful to the learner in helping him/her to remember the concepts learnt. • There are also solved problems at the end of the chapters so as to further illustrate how to apply the concepts learnt in solving real world problems. About the The author has taught computer science in Kenyan universities for many years. Computer programming has been his main teaching area as well as his area of special interest for many years. He holds a PhD in computer science. He is also the author of the book titled “Fundamentals of Programming using C”.
