“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Prov. 4:23).
Whether we know it or not, all of us have had heart trouble. The good news is that Jesus Christ is the best heart specialist of all time. In this collection, Bessie examines the Bible’s references to the heart: what God says about our condition, and what provision He has made for us in Jesus Christ. It is no-nonsense Bible teaching with an emphasis on practical application.
Elizabeth Catherine Dodds received Christ at the age of 15 and dedicated her life to Christian ministry. After attending Prairie Bible Institute, she ministered in Alberta homestead country and taught for Inter-School Christian Fellowship. In 1948, she joined the Women’s Union Missionary Society as principal of the Kyoritsa Bible School for Women in post-war Yokohama, Japan. Bessie married Jim Wilson in 1952. She went to be with her Lord in 2010.
This was written by my wife Bessie. Back in the 1980s and ’90s, Community Christian Ministries published a little free magazine called The Hammer. The title was taken from Jeremiah 23:29, “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” It was in this little publication that these articles were first printed as Bessie's regular column called “The Heart.”
Wonderful and very practical little pamphlet full of wisdom about the nature of our hearts and how Scripture provides an answer for our state. Highly recommend as a daily devotional read for a week, it’s short but contains lots to meditate on!
Phenomenal. Wonderful little booklet on the heart of a Christian, must read for all believers as an encouragement, a challenge, and a reminder. Filled with scriptural support. I loved how simple and to the point she was when discussing these issues. I commend it! Ps. 24.
A great little booklet that could be read like a devotional, or simply straight through for a refreshing look at the heart of man -both the good and the bad parts. If you have ever listened to Nancy Wilson’s podcast, it read like a transcript from her show. Which means it was thoughtful, caring, humble, and Biblical.
This is one of those short reads that ends up hitting hard in a lot of unexpected places. It is good that it is short because it will need some steady rereads.
Five Stars because everyone and their grandmothers should read it.
(Audiobook). Really short and really good! I heard about this book from Abigail Dodds and Tilly Dillahay before I knew it was by Doug Wilson’s mom. Full of wisdom! The last chapter on unchecked discernment turning into a critical spirit was particularly convicting.
A small book full of wisdom gleaned from faithfully searching and applying the Scriptures. I will frequently reread this as it is loving counsel from an older, godly woman.
