This is one of the funniest books ever written and illustrated. Two dogs dig together until they find a bone; ONE bone. An ownership dispute arises between the two dogs. ‘I saw it first!” vs “I touched it first!” They decide to ask the locals for help figuring out to whom the bone belongs. One after another these helpers trick the dogs but don’t solve the problem. And then a BIG dog comes ambling down the road. They ask him to help figure out whose bone it is. He asks to see said bone and promptly takes off with it. I won’t spill the beans here but will warn sensitive readers, there is a vicious dog-fight in this story which some parents might object to.
This book won the Caldecott Medal in the early 1950s. The artwork is okay, though not what I would consider great. The story has a fairly good message, though the two dog friends beat up the larger thief dog to get back their bone. It's not my favorite Caldecott winning book, but it's not my least favorite either.
Finders Keepers is the 1952 Caldecott Award winner. It was written and illustrated by Will ans Nicolas. I did not like this book either and the only illustration I liked was on the 2nd title page. I am realizing a lot of these earlier Caldecott winners are not my cup of tea. I am also wondering who exactly were these books written for???
A great story about the importance of sharing. The story brings humor and excitement about what will happen to the bone. The illustrations are fun and exciting, bringing the story alive. A great way to show students the importance of sharing with friends.
I thought this book was very engaging, and I liked how it teaches people to share and that not everything is about figuring out who's thing is who's. Overall, it was a great story with a good message.
This book had different illustrations than I'm used to, but they were still good. I thought the book was good and it had a nice message that you should share.
This book has a good message about sharing, but it had some violent parts that felt unnecessary to the story, such as the two dogs biting and slashing the bigger dog to get their bone back.
