Zebra's Day Out
Zebra is excited when he hears that he will be going out to the cafe with Gabrielle and Gran. But there is a lot that Zebra still has to learn about days out. Is a cafe anything like the circus in the picture book? Will he like the food there? Will there be playing?

Zebra’s Day Out is a cute children’s story. Gran is spending the day with Gabrielle. Gabrielle convinces Gran to let her take zebra with her as they go places. And when they return home, Mom has also returned from wherever it was that she went.
The illustrations are cute, and they help paint the picture of what is going on in the story.

I was granted complimentary access to Zebra’s Day Out as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
When Gabrielle convinces her grandmother that Zebra should come along on their outing to the cafe, Zebra’s world gets a whole lot bigger. It’s a cute story about how to treat others and how to behave in public, and I think it definitely has its place in classrooms and as a bedtime story with slightly older young readers.
I do think the text chunks could have been distributed a little more evenly, as some pages had just a couple sentences while others had large block paragaphs. Kids younger than their Kindergarten year probably aren’t going to sit through that (I know my 3.5 year old didn’t) but primary grade kids probably will.
The illustrations are captivating and the artist is clearly very skilled. I do think these pictures will draw kids in and keep them interested. Purely as a personal preference critique point, I found it a little distracting that so much of the illustrations were full of small details and demonstrated excellent understanding of shape and form on behalf of the artist, yet half the time the zebra was drawn (and not “by Gabrielle”) the shape was very rudimentary and the colouring messy. As a fellow artist, the style choice stood out in a distracting way. Kids absolutely will not mind, and the other half of the zebra images were beautiful!
Overall this is a cute kids book that would not go amiss in the hands of kids (or their parents/teachers) ages 5+.

This is a cute children’s tale.
Gabrielle’s and Zebra’s innocent perspectives offer charming and humorous insights at times. When Gabrielle asks Gran if she can bring Zebra out with them, Gran is worried because Zebra can cause problems. What kinds of problems? Surely, children will want to know!
The phrasing brings to mind the type of book parents would read to their child or a teacher to a class with ideas a little one might have. Sometimes though, a vague concept might have been more specific, or a sentence written to be more personal. For example, when Zebra did something naughty in public and received a look of censure, he “…didn’t know why.” How did Zebra feel about the look? Sad? Defiant?
The artwork is fantastic. It might bring to mind for some those childhood stories of their own youth with the ability to add a touch of magic to the tale and fire up the imagination.
For parents who are looking for an appealing book to read to their children while cuddling or teachers who wish to keep the attention of their students, this story would probably do the trick.

Gabrielle’s mother will be out for a little while, so Gran comes over to stay with him. Gabrielle wanted to bring his favorite toys when they all headed out for the day. Zebra was the most important toy, but sometimes he caused trouble. And, this time was no different.
At the cafe, Zebra caused trouble by throwing the water in the air and being naughty. Gran paid quickly and they all went to have a picnic outdoors. This was much more pleasant, because Zebra had grass, which was what he wanted. Children will love the story of the child and his favorite toys and the imaginative tale of their adventures.

A fun day out with Gran and some of Gabrielle’s toys, including a spirited, little zebra.
Lovely abstract watercolored illustrations!

Gabrielle loves spending time with his Gran. Gabrielle is very excited when Gran comes to visit. Gabrielle and Gran decide to go to the Cafe and then to the park and play. Gabrielle wants to have some of his toys come along too. He wants his friend Zebra to come too but Gran is uncertain about Zebra going as he can be a little rambunctious sometimes but soon gives in after Gabrielle promises her that Zebra will play nice this time.
Today is not much different for Zebra as he does act up somewhat at the cafe but he enjoys the park a lot more and plays real nice. Zebra still has a lot to learn when it comes to manners and how he should act out in public. He also needs to learn a few lessons about being respectful to others too.
All in all, I did enjoy Gran, Gabrielle, and Zebra’s time outside playing at the park and visiting the cafe. Zebra's Day Out is a nice way of teaching children how they should act when they go out and how they should treat people.
Zebra's Day Out is a great story for parents to read to their children and another way for parents to spend time with their children. Zebra's Day Out would make a sweet little bedtime story.
