This collection of essays is penned by a Japanese reporter who has lived in Taiwan for 20+ years. The short stories and the essays of Taiwan's society, practices and cultures are fun to read about, like the stories about the author's first experience with the arrival of a typhoon, how the guy dealt with the cold winter in Taiwan (strangely he feels the winter in Taiwan is even harder to deal with than in the supposedly colder Japan), how his fellow Japanese reacted to Taiwanese food, etc etc.
It's more of a 'slice of life' study of how living in Taiwan is like, and some light-heartened comparison between Japanese and Taiwanese societies/cultures. You aren't going to see much in depth criticism or analyses of the societies, but I'm fine with it.
PS: the author also reveals the Japanese aren't really offended when people (mostly those Chinese little pinks) call them ' Little/Small Japan' because in Japanese language, the words 'big' and 'small' are only objectively referring to the size of things, but if you called them with anything referring to 'low' or 'low class', people are going to be so furious. ^^;;
