About the author

Ambai (nom de plume of C. S. Lakshmi), is a historian, an independent Women's Studies researcher, and a feminist writer in Tamil. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Madras Christian College and MA in Bangalore and her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her dissertation was on American policy towards refugees fleeing Hungary due to the failed revolution of 1956. After completing her education, she worked as a school teacher and college lecturer in Tamil Nadu. She is married to Vishnu Mathur, a film maker, and lives in Mumbai.

In 1962, Ambai published her first work Nandimalai Charalilae (lit. At Nandi Hills) – written when she was still a teenager. Her first serious work of fiction was the Tamil novel Andhi Maalai (lit. Twilight) published in 1966. She received critical acclaim with the short story Siragukal muriyum (lit. Wings Will be Broken) (1967) published in the literary magazine Kanaiyazhi. This story was later published in book form as a part of short story collection under the same name in 1976. The same year she was awarded a two-year fellowship to study the work of Tamil women writers. The research work was published as The Face behind the mask (Advent Books) in 1984. In 1988, her second Tamil short story collection titled Veetin mulaiyil oru samaiyalarai (lit. A Kitchen in the Corner of the House) was published. This established her reputation as a major short story writer.

Her work is characterised by her feminism, an eye for detail, and a sense of irony. Some of her works – A Purple Sea (1992) and In A Forest, A Deer (2006) – have been translated to English by Lakshmi Holmström. For her contributions to Tamil literature, she received the 2008 Iyal Virudhu (Lifetime Achievement Award) awarded by the Canada-based Tamil Literary Garden. She is currently the Director of SPARROW (Sound & Picture Archives for Research on Women).

Two reasons I picked this up:

1. Ambai, whom I deeply respect, once translated a poem by Akhil Katyal that I had shared on Facebook—and even tagged me. Ever since, I’ve been itching to read more of her work. (I had read Veetin Moolaiyil Oru Samaiyalarai nearly a decade ago.)

2. I wanted to hear actor Lakshmipriya Chandramouli narrate a book. I’ve admired her performances in Karnan and a few other films, and was curious how her voice would carry a story.

The book is a detective short story set in Mumbai. It’s always refreshing to get a woman’s perspective, but here you get many—every major character is a woman, each dealing with her own struggles. Kind of like how Black Panther featured a world where every major player was Black—this story builds a universe where women drive the narrative from every angle.

The thriller setup keeps you hooked, but beneath it, Ambai is peeling back layers—quietly unpacking some deep socio-political issues. I won't say more because I don’t want to spoil it.

It’s a strong, thoughtful short story. If you’re into Ambai’s writing—or just want to experience a powerful female-led story with great narration—this one’s worth your time.

நான்கு சிறுகதைகளின் தொகுப்பே இந்த ஸாரஸ் பறவை ஒன்றின் மரணம். ஆனால், இந்த நான்குகதைகளும் சுதா எனும் துப்பறியும் நிபுணரின் வாழ்க்கையுடன் தொடர்ந்து போவது சிறப்பம்சம். இந்த நான்கு கதைகளுமே மும்பையையும் அதை சார்ந்த பகுதிகளும் நடப்பது போல அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த கதைகளின் கருவுமே ஒன்றுக்கொன்று வேறுபட்டு காணப்பட்டிருந்தாலும் நிச்சயம் "Hard Hitting" ஆக இருக்கிறது. எந்த இடத்திலும் முகம் சுளிக்க வைக்காமல் விறுவிறுப்புடன் செல்கிறது. இந்த கதைகள் அழுத்தி சொல்லும் விஷயங்கள் ஆவன.

* ஒருவர் தன் சுதந்திரத்தை யாருக்காகவும் விட்டுக்கொடுக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் இல்லை. அவருடன் இருப்பவர்களும் அதை புரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும். அது தன்னை மாற்றுப்பாலினத்தவராக மாற்றிக்கொள்வதாய் இருந்தாலும் சரி.

*மனப்பிறழ்வு என்பதை சரியாக்காமல் அந்த சாத்தானை மூடி வைப்பதன் மூலம் எங்கள் வாழ்க்கைக்கு தீர்வு கிடைக்கப்போவதில்லை. வினை விதைத்தவன் எதிர்வினையை எதிர்கொள்ள தைரியம் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும்.

*நெருங்கிய இருவருக்கிடையே வெவ்வேறு பாதைகளில் செல்லவேண்டிய கட்டாயம் வந்தால் பிரிந்து செல்வதில் எந்த தவறும் இல்லை. ஒருவரை ஒருவரிடம் திணிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் இல்லை.

*நமக்கு நெருக்கமான ஒருவர் நாம் சொல்வதெல்லாம் செய்கிறார் என்பதற்காக அவர் அதை விரும்பி செய்கிறார் என்பது அர்த்தம் இல்லை. அவரின் உண்மையான விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளுக்கு நாம் மதிப்பளிக்க வேண்டும்.

ஒரு நாளைக்குள் முடிக்கக்கூடிய சிறிய புத்தகம். ஆனால், அம்பையின் கேள்விகள் எங்களை சில இடங்களில் அம்பை போல துளைக்கும் என்பதில் எந்த சந்தேகமும் இல்லை.
