The Ordination of Women in the Orthodox Church

The whole question of the place of women in the church, their sharing in responsibilities and the exercise of authority within it -- which implies access to the ordained ministry -- represents one of the major challenges posed for the traditional Christian churches by the modern Western world. Initially the Orthodox churches maintained that this challenge did not concern them, but gradually they have come to take it to heart. After outlining the historical context, Elisabeth Behr-Sigel describes the ups and downs of the difficult growth of consciousness, coupled with a creative return to the sources of genuine ecclesial Tradition called for by frank ecumenical dialogue. Bishop Kallistos Ware sets the question of the ordination of women in perspective in the light of patristic anthropology and Orthodox theology. This book also sets the Orthodox church in a new light; often described as 'Eastern', a large diaspora is found today throughout the world, and especially in Western Europe and North America.

Particularly enjoyed Kallistos Ware’s chapter in its caution and humility (traits Behr-Siegel also demonstrates in all her writing). Looking at this question from the Orthodox angle is further enlightening and helpful, and as the traditions of the church are important to me (so that the church not having ordained women for most of its history is personally one of the most compelling arguments against women’s ordination), it was helpful to read a work that dealt with this question in the context of Tradition, something that doesn’t tend to come up much in Protestant debates beyond a “women have never been ordained!” or “but look at all the ministries women have had!” As I’m not Orthodox, not every argument was particularly relevant to my thinking on the subject, but as it is one of the oldest and largest branches of the church universal, it’s interesting and important to see how these conversations are taking place in wildly different contexts. I don’t know where the Orthodox Church is now (20 yrs later) on this topic (besides obviously they don’t ordain women priests), but I hope they are holding onto the same openness and humility as demonstrated in these essays.

Православное отношение к рукоположению женщин только начинает формироваться. Оно постепенно проясняется в диалоге как внутри Православной церкви, так и между православными богословами и представителями других церквей. Однако в таком диалоге участвует меньшинство, представленное в основном западными богословами. Между этим ограниченным кругом и православным народом - огромный разрыв, особенно в странах Восточной Европы. Как и в первые века христианства, те, кто уже освободился во Христе от стереотипов и табу, не должны смущать «слабых», которые могут оказаться «сильными» в чем-нибудь другом….

Появился проблеск надежды на возможность мудрого и творческого восстановления женского диаконата. Нужно обсуждать в мире и согласии вопрос, поставленный церквами, которые рукополагают женщин в сан пресвитера. Православные церкви должны терпимо, по-братски понимать, что Дух может обращаться к церкви через откровения другой церкви…
А пока согласие не достигнуто, православные церкви могли бы допустить, что во Вселенской церкви есть и другие подходы к рукоположению».
