I was interested to read this poetry collection by an Indie Author in Pakistan. I was intrigued to see how someone of a different culture approached poetry, and language. I was pleased with the outcome.

Although some of the phrasing was cumbersome, probably due to the challenges of translation, I enjoyed the concepts and vocabulary in this book. There were many themes on love, perspective, solitude, and relationships that were easy to understand and lovely to experience. It is clear that this writer has a thoughtful mind and a vibrant imagination.

If you are interested in how someone from another culture contemplates life through the written word, this book would be a good choice.

Apparently, Murtaza’s Puppet seems a collection of poems narrated adequately. However, the fact of the matter is that this anthology is an embodiment of multiple themes which encapsulate common aspects of human life and emotions in his unique style. While reading, one gets goosebumps with every single word. Moreover, his poems are sequenced in a manner to narrate a story of a child from his childhood to his adolescence and adulthood. The subject of his poems progresses in a complete cycle from childhood innocence to emotionally sensitive adolescence and finally towards his maturity and ripeness of his wisdom. Initially he begins with a carefree and curiously adventurous boy who is not scared of taking any risk and moves on without paying a heed to the fears of what people will say or think. The book then advances towards a more complex realities of human life. It reveals the amalgamation of joys and troublesome worries of the narrator and the youth in general. Narration of the lover’s heartbreak leaves the reader with moist eyes. The themes of the anthology are beaded in such a manner that it resonates with the lives of his readers. As for instance, in his poem “A Coffee Mug”, his nostalgia about the beloved leaves not just the lover but the readers with the suspicion about their reunion. He grasps the attention of the reader who feels curious to know what would happen next and hopes for their re-unification.
The Puppet is kept eloquently simple, but thought-provokingly difficult to digest. I believe that the best aspect of this book is his use of short blank verse. The poet’s skillful representation of his subject in his anthology reveals his talent of knowing the worth of every single word. Additionally, he uses the figurative devices such as metaphors, similes and alliteration beautifully and adequately to bring out the desired effect of his work. For instance, his similes of swan, rose and queen for his beloved not only places his beloved at the throne of heavenly beauty but also shows poet’s sensitivity towards nature as well. Murtaza’s Puppet bring forth the element of spirituality and feelings of ecstasy, as in the line “Feeling ecstasy and rising riding the past winds” shows that the narrator has that spark which eventually will empower him to tame and ride the winds.
As a matter of fact, I found this book very impressive because it teaches you how to lead better in life, instead of resentment and remorse. I highly appreciate Murtaza’s efforts in this book and recommend it as a good read. It is an interesting romance of youth, tragedy in a reality and a guide to seek maturity and wisdom.

Title: “Puppet”
Author: Murtaza Ali
.
“And He is not just the greatest well wisher
But the greatest judge of our actions too.”
-Murtaza Ali
.
Throughout the drive of “Puppet”, the reader will voyage through 120 pages, embracing different phases of life, being a “PUPPET”. The relatable poems just took the imagination high, and the short paragraphs are brilliantly penned.
Every word takes one to the world magnificently portrayed. The rhymes were perfectly woven, and the metaphors brilliantly connect with reality. The journey through deep and vast vocabulary takes this book to another level. The vivid language instantly transported me into the world, along with the catchy and impressive poetry style.
.
“Puppet” dives through various life instances. How man learns harsh realities day by day, step by step, and how hope lightens up the dark, dull plans was explained beautifully. The cruelty of entangled, obscure fate was woven impressively. It symbolically covered the beauty of acceptance and facing rejection. It notably highlighted the love for Creator and His bounties.
The leading factor behind our "I love you generation", its facts and consequences were phenomenal. It threw light on the fact, of how our generation is approaching to fulfill the deficiencies of love they lack from their parent's side.
“Puppet” covers different states of hope and fantasies, the cruel behavior of fate and the blames encountered on the fate,
And yet it stayed
“-The confused Fate”.

Such a heartfelt book!
And this is coming from a person who isn't even into poetry. Sooo....if I'm loving it, everyone surely will.
I would highly recommend this book, specifically to someone who has gone through a heartbreak.

Murtaza Ali’s Puppet- a Book Review
Once the tapestry of fate
Enclosed the lives:
The two wandering souls
On being too lively
The other a little reserved
Nonetheless, both got entangled,
in the frame of love.
In the same breezes
In the same rains
in the same November.
Murtaza Ali
Murtaza Ali’s Puppet evokes the inner child. The poems are sweet, cute, full of passion, and optimistic. And they are relatable and realistic. Also, the book is enjoyable, contradictory, but full of life. For example, a simple poem has contrasts like hope and gloom merged well. It is romantic and has beautiful imagery. The collection of poems is hopeful and bursting with happy emotions. Though there were some elements of sadness, then that is how life is.
Puppet is simple yet full of depth and has strong spiritual messages. It is so emotional yet bitter. The pieces are impressive, and the theme of resignation to fate is prominent. The poet uses the literary devices of humanization. Ali has a strong inclination towards spirituality, and his poetic pieces are soulful. In one of them, the following lines made me sigh:
Leaving me behind entangled in the circles of memories
Some parts of the book are so gloomy. In the atmosphere Ali creates, the readers do not want to step out of that world. Puppet took me to the old times, the chivalrous days of castles, princesses, and knights. I felt like I was watching Disney movies, a story of love or fantasy, fairytale, or mind-blowing paintings. I wish some pieces had a happy ending. However, again, life is uncertain and often without forever.
The pieces are picturesque. Ali’s book has awe-inspiring ways of expression. The feelings of pain, suffering, sacrifice, and cruelty, suffocation, and a wish to break free are prominent. A few topics are so thought-provoking. And I did not expect him to pick them in his debut book. However, Ali left me pleasantly surprised. Moreover, he has not only done justice to them, but his style impresses the readers too.
Ali uses similes or metaphors in his work, like the Romantics. The effort for sure resonates with readers creating a beautiful impact. A couple of his art pieces are symbolic. For example, The Raindrops one of my favorites by him. Art pieces by Ali might symbolize the memories of love. After reading, the readers would stroll down the paths of happy times. They would yearn to spend time with the people they love. They will start believing in eternal bonds if they do not.
Serious topics are Murtaza Ali’s forte. Some parts are unpredictable but have unique concepts. Puppet is imaginative, melodic, and the language is simple. Not the poems only, but the short prose is impressive too. I would recommend the book for sure, and if someone has not read it yet, then they are missing out on a good read. Also, I would score it 9 out of 10.
