Hugo's Child

Rate this book
Nico is autistic. Likewise, his father. His avid hunger for knowledge of natural phenomena and his exceptional musical aptitude, triggers periods of reclusiveness and creativity. His precociousness and his literal approach is perceived to be an abnormality by neurotypicals, who lack understanding of his social differences.Their obliviousness doesn’t deter him from challenging societal norms and raising awareness of difference and disability. It merely strengthens his determination to accomplish his birth mission of educating people to become more aware of the fact, that all human beings are unique, whatever their differences. In spite of the challenges his autism brings, he embraces his eccentricities and encourages his peers to accept their own idiosyncrasies. On occasions, his acute spiritual awareness and intuitive sixth sense enlightens him of previous lifetimes with his grandmother.Could she be just one of many individuals who will help him to balance his karma?

Susan's astute way of writing, raises awareness of autism. So much so, that I feel that I have a better understanding ASD.
I loved the way that Nico challenged society and it's perception of normality and how he embraced his eccentricities and spirituality. His character was easy to fall in love with.
