For me, this book has been key to understanding the effects our current American situation has had on my anxiety level, and has helped me feel clearer and hopeful as time moves forward.

For months Americans have been in a state of uncertainty on more levels than we have experienced in recent history. From divisiveness, political unrest, racial violence, a pandemic, unemployment, massive fires and hurricanes plus an uncertain short term, if not long term, future. Even talking about all that is out of whack can cause our blood pressure to rise, let along trying to figure out what we can do about any of it.

United States of Trauma synthesizes and helps make sense of the “four complex and interlocking threats currently confronting us.” Furthermore, the book was written to give clarity to understanding the next steps.

In a succinct narrative easy to grasp, the authors have given us a road map for getting a grip on the connectedness of the threats. For, how do you navigate such an uncertain state without an understanding on where you are and the choices you have for moving forward. If awareness is truly curative then this book is the key to understanding and hope.

The authors’ goal is a lofty one: “to unify Americans in the values we thought this country was founded upon. It is not to return to ‘normal,’ - but rather to shape a ‘new normal’ in which we rise as a fairer, more equitable and democratic nation.” What do we have to lose by trying? With this book, the healing from the trauma in which we stand can be the start.
