I am generally a jaded hardcore horror fan, but I like to read other things too, in order to have a healthier literary diet. Purchasing these twelve Caribbean Cruise cozy novellas by Susan Harper has been a real treat. The storylines are predictable, short, and stretch the borders of believability, but these novellas have heart embedded in these stories with a clear objective in mind. They are entertaining and likeable.
In this eleventh story, Hope and Esperanza make their way to Mexico to meet with Hope’s biological family and another murder occurs where Hope is the initial suspect. More sleuthing becomes necessary and adds to the overall kick I have gotten from these stories. (I just wish that Harper would have done her part to make these cozy mysteries at least a little bit believable.)
Now reunited with her identical twin sister, Esperanza, Hope travels with her and Monica, the sister from her adoptive parents, to Mexico to meet her biological mother. The reunion doesn't turn out quite as expected when her newly found cousin, Carmen is murdered after stealing a valuable family necklace.
While Hope learns that her father is a respected American archaeologist, Felix also gets news of his biological Dad.
There is very little mystery to this story. It is more about Hope and her personal relationships.
How many bodies can a person who is not with the police stumble across within a short span of time?
Another mystery away from the ship as Hope meets her Mexican family. Really interesting background into life in borderland Mexico, and some insight into funeral customs there. The references to the 'Day of the Dead' celebrations appear authentic, as do the details of family life. The mystery element works well too, just a pity that someone got themselves killed. Great read - enjoyed this one.
this cover made me smile. i am not sure if i have read anything from Susan Harper before?? i gotta check. i enjoyed this so so much!! mysteries are way awesome!! this genre is my fave. must read. i loved it!!
Meeting your biological family for the first time is stressful but add a murder. The first one to get blamed is the new family member. Can the murderer be found? Hope is at it again to prove that she didn't kill her cousin.
I loved this one. Just as much as all the other ones. Hope finds...no spoiler here. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out what happens. You won't be disappointed.
