A Touch Of Night: Pride, Prejudice, Werewolves and Dragons, Oh, My!

Rate this book
A Pride and Prejudice Variation. In a world that puts shape shifters to death, Mr. Darcy was unfortunate enough to be born as a were-dragon. But the cruel laws don't always find their victims. Mr. Darcy has survived and protected Mr. Bingley who is a werewolf. Meanwhile, in Hertfordshire, Lizzy has been protecting her sister Jane who turns into a beautiful hunting dog. When Mr. Bingley rents Netherfield, the Were-Laws and the shape shifting of three of them add extra complications to the flowering of romance between the well-loved couples. And Mr. Wickham. joining the Royal Were Hunters, lends additional danger to the situation. Will they get together despite the danger, Lizzy's active imagination and Mr. Darcy's excessive nobility of character? (This book was previously published with Sarah A. Hoyt and Sofie Skapski as the authors. Sarah's name has been changed to match her other published Austen fanfic.)

This story is an old friend I tend to re-visit in October. It was originally published in 2010 (A Touch of Night) and was recently re-released by a new publisher with a new cover and a new pen name for one of the co-authors. I often pick it up around Halloween for an obvious reason - it offers a paranormal Pride and Prejudice with characters who are shape shifters!

Elizabeth Bennet is not one of them, but her sister Jane is. Unfortunately, England imposes a death sentence on anyone exposed as a shape shifter (A.K.A. Were-beast, A.K.A. lycanthrope), and Elizabeth guards Jane's secret - even from the rest of the Bennet family.

Around the same time Netherfield is leased, Elizabeth and Jane become aware there are two other Weres in the area, and one is a beautiful dragon. With several neighbors also having spotted the were-dragon, it doesn't take long for the Royal Were Hunters to arrive and investigate. Mr. Wickham is one of them.

The P&P storyline proceeds with a magical action-adventure incorporated into the plot. (Darcy makes for one sexy dragon!)

Much as I like the story, I have to admit that the writing, although quite good, is uneven in tone and subject matter.

Some parts are very dark and serious, with the protagonists in mortal danger. At various times, one or more characters are cornered by a pack of wild dogs, held at knife-point, and feverishly ill and dying.

Then there's the Adult Content, with Elizabeth happening upon a naked Darcy and Bingley (immediately after shifting back into human form), leading her to believe the two have a "depraved" relationship. A camp in India where some Weres are deported to be "cured" has an obvious parallel to the modern institutions purporting to do "conversion therapy" for homosexuals. I think the author is going for some social commentary, but it feels forced in this context.

Others parts are absurdly silly. Mr. Collins turns into an orangutan when he's nervous, but hardly anyone notices because it's so similar to his normal appearance - even when he's putting his shoe on his head. It's a funny picture, but it seems too over-the-top in a book that isn't a full-out parody the whole way through.

Despite the book's disjointedness, I continue to find it an entertaining read.

I am going DNF with this one but I wanted to note that it is strictly just my own liking and not liking.

I'm not so much for the supernatural. Dragons, Shapeshifters, Were-folk ... just not my thing.
If you like these elements, you would probably like this book.

DNF at 18%

There is no benefits in being a were in this universe. No hightened semaal, sight etc. So they just cange and thats all.

2nd, and the reason its a defenite DNF it's of Lizzy homophobic remark as a perversion. I get it that homosexuality was a tabo in regency era but acceptig humans turning into animals but two man consoling eachother is to much is a hard NO for me!

Shame on you!!!
