Wen Xuan was the head disciple of Water Cloud Sect’s sect leader. He spent the first half of his lifetime respecting his teachers and placing importance in the way of Dao. Friendly towards other fellow disciples, he was everyone’s role model.
He once believed that he would spend a lifetime like this. Until one day, he met a younger fellow disciple (shidi) who was unbelievably skilled.
This shidi told him that this world was actually a novel. And he, Wen Xuan, would become the most unsightly, petty little villain in this leveling up style cultivation novel. With the next half of his lifetime on a bumpy spiral downward after an erroneous decision, he will be betrayed and deserted by friends and family, casted away and end up dying miserably alone.
“After dinner for leisure, many people would use a mocking tone of disdain to discuss your disastrous life. But no one knew how you survived through all those years. No one saw how you struggled to hold on to your principles in your lonesome. No one cared about the suffering you experienced and your perseverance. But I saw it. I know. I care.”
“That’s why I came to this world. To become your support.”
No ha estado mal, la historia era interesante. Pero no han sabido desarrollarlo a mí parecer. Apartado 36 del reto. Libro con menos de.1000 reseñas en goodreads o Amazon (este caso goodreads)
I can't say I quite expected it to go where it did regarding the gong, especially as it amounts to both a critical think piece on the pushover shou and the obsessive gong, but I think it actually does lose a bit of it's impact by bringing them back together in the end.
Still, kudos to the author for writing what I thought was going to be a pretty stereotypical pairing only to be like nope, they're both wrong (though really, the gong more so) and they both need to take a step back and figure themselves the fuck out.
And I'll acknowledge this--even if I do think that the message would've been stronger if they'd continued on their separate paths, I appreciate that the shou really did put his foot down and say 'no, nope, I'm not going to continue to deal with this' and that you can see the gong actively trying to reach out and have healthy relationships with people outside of the shou.
I'm giving this book 2/3.5 stars. At first, I wasn't going to write a review of this story, but now I get to the end of the book, I have many complicated feelings for it. I feel like the most worthy thing to read about this book is Jian Yi's character development, and I'm not talking about character growth, because he stays during all the book being the same hateful, selfish, overprotecting and despering little guy. Other people who have read the book may disagree with me, but I think Jian Yi is the most interesting character in the book. When it comes to him I can only either pity him, despise him or feel empathy. He is a humane character, he is selfish, a despicable and doesn't try to hide it, really different from Wen Xuan who is that righteous and forgiving character you all must be really familiar with. One thing I like about this book is the concept of "When I say I want to save you, what I'm trying to say is save me". Because sometimes the person who want appears to be the tougher, meanest or most reliable is often fullfiling his own desire of wanting to be "saved" by "saving" others. Jian Yi is an insecure character, and you can easily watch that through the plot, he fear being abandoned, being replaced and being alone, but in the end, who doesn´t? His paranoia and protectiveness are the main factors that cause him and Wen Xuan to be in disagreement, because of this he is always guarded and doesn't trust others at all (There's only Wen Xuan). His obsession with Wen Xuan comes from his own insecurity. I just want to say, who doesn't fear being abandoned? Who doesn't want to feel like you have someone to rely on? Though Jian Yi's way of acting is never the correct one and his actions are always hatefull, I can understand his way of feeling, though I don't approve his "You have no one but me", "Everyone will betray you", "Only I'll be by your side", "No one's life matters but yours". Who wants someone to constanlty tell him that he's alone in the world? And, who wants someone who doesn't care about human lifes when he himself treasures them and takes care of them? The plot is... Alright. It is really fast paced though, I couldn't really say it's the best plot or one really worth to remember, because in the end the author didn't really invest time in it. At the end there are many conflicts that were presented but never solved. There are many loose ends that's one of the reason I'm not sure how to rate this. I think this book may really be worth reading, it may not be the best one or more memorable, but it deserves a chance.
I was in the mood for something a little bit more lighthearted, so I decided to give this book a try. Overall it was an okay story, but the story went in a very different direction from what I was expecting and made it clear that both the MC and ML have some issues they need to work through.
The story follows the MC, Wen Xuan, who is the head disciple of the Water Cloud Sect. He was brought back to the sect as a baby by his master and was essentially raised there, so he has a lot of loyalty towards the sect. Unfortunately, the sect doesn't treat him as nicely. For example, the sect leader gave him a cultivation method that doesn't match his pure water root and completely stopped his progress. It's not until he meets an outer disciple shidi called Jian Yi who treats him very sincerely that he gradually learns the truth behind how the sect elders, including his master, are treating him. As it turns out, JY is someone who transmigrated into this world after reading and being very familiar with the novel, so he knows how a lot of things end up playing out.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The story starts out with the MC and ML at the sect, but not too long afterwards, they embark on a long journey to search for rare ingredients. On their journey, first we learn about Jian Yi's past, or rather the past of JY's body, who was cursed by his aunt in partnership with a demon. They get revenge on the aunt and her husband and clear JY's name in the town once and for all. Once they resolve that, then it's WX's turn, and we inadvertently find out about his true heritage as a half demonic beast when he and JY are looking for a pure water item for Murong Feng.
Up till this point, the story was still going okay, but after this is where things start to go downhill for me. They have to escape to a deserted island to keep their lives after the sect is attacked by a powerful demon, but on that island, JY's possessive tendencies to monopolize WX become more and more obvious. And after WX's true form as a half demonic beast is revealed, JY literally seals him in a cave and doesn't even let him come outside at all "for his protection". WX's overly submissive and dependent nature lets JY get away with this and subsequent actions, but finally JY crosses his bottom line by trying to kill a little girl who accidentally wandered into the cave. Thank god WX is finally willing to stand up for himself!
Both characters really could've done with some therapy. JY has a lot of unresolved issues from his parents abandoning him in his previous life for his healthy younger brother, and I think that fear of abandonment plays heavily into his possessiveness towards WX. I'm also not sure why he started having such an unhealthy obsession with WX's character after reading the novel, especially because WX wasn't even the protagonist of the story... On the other hand, WX lets JY get away with too much and needs to take a firmer stance towards him. It's good that near the end, both of them take some time away from each other to sort out their issues before they meet again, and then finally they get together at the very end.
This started out well, but started feeling flat around half-way, and I can't even explain why. Exciting things happened, characters reacted to it appropriately, mysteries unfurling... and yet it felt rather flat.
Maybe because the lead characters felt shallow. The MC character trait and thought process was dominated by the fact that he was the "good guy", while the ML didn't seem to have much depth beyond his obsession of the MC.
In the romance department, there's barely any romance. The 2 leads, at the end, just kind of went into "yah I liked him after all" and accepted their new relationship smoothly. I would have loved more romantic moments, but well. In the early stages it was better at least, with the MC questioning his own feelings, giving at least some depth in the emotional aspect.
There were also unresolved plot lines... for example, what happened to the rest of the MC's old sect? They didn't show any retribution for the Sect Leader either. I would have loved the story/epilogue to expand further and show what happened to the rest of the characters... like the ML's shifu, did he succeed? And were they just letting the demonic cultivator run rampant? That last part was baffling to me...

Rating: 3.5/5- uhhmm I don’t know how I feel about this novel. Whilst reading this I couldn’t help feeling that all its potential seemed unused.
The plot was clever but it had very heavy undertones that were overlooked and left for too late- leaving it unexplored or undervalued instead of properly expressed. I felt slightly disappointed with many things in this book because there were many really brilliant moments.
Villains were hardly used, characters were created but disappeared without reason or without ending their arc, the cultivation kind of got lost somewhere and it felt like many ideas started off but didn’t progress anywhere. What was most disappointing was how poorly the author wrote the MLs character.
I wanted to like this a lot more but I can’t help feeling like the author built up my hopes only to let me down. The romance factor was doing well until the last 6 chapters and everything crumbled- just like the plot.
It became a weak finish for a novel that had a strong start and unlimited potential. Especially because this had the makings of a really good Xianxia novel.
Sebenarnya ide ceritanya menarik. Diakhir cerita penyelesaian masalahnya terkesan tergesa-gesa, masih banyak pertanyaan yg belum terjawab. Rasanya baru asik2 baca tiba2 langsung end
At first i thought it was just an ok novel but then one of the main characters started showing his dark side more and more and in the second part the tale became really twisted and tragic. In short it turned out to be a pretty good story in the end. It was by no means perfect (as i said for approx half of the story i thought it was just ok) but some unexpected subjects for cultivation danmei were raised there.
Transmigration xianxia with a novel character MC and transmigrator love interest. The first half was fairly standard with the transmigrator using novel plot points to benefit his favorite character and himself but the book starts hitting on existential themes at the halfway mark. The existentialism culminated into an exploration of how readers interact with the books they consume, the messages they come away with, and how they can find deep meaning and representation in side characters. I wish the book was longer because the final handful of chapters were my favorite but the ending felt rushed
A different point of view from the norm and quite a fun read. The ending was indeed a bit rushed and a lot of things weren’t explained. The main focus of the story is the relationship between the MC and ML and I quite enjoyed it so giving it a 3 star. This got potential though. A bit disappointing for it to end as such.
very well written. it focuses morw on character development rather than their own love journey. nevertheless it’s worth the read. gives me some kind of cleansing vibes. 💯recommended
10/11/22 2 stars: I don't know why but I expected this to be darker than it actually was which was not at all. It's really slow and even though there's a plot, it actually feels like nothing is really happening. There's also not a lot of romance. Jian Yi does stick to Wen Xuan the entire time and is possessive but he was never that extreme. The synopsis also made it sound like Wen Xuan was going to turn into a villain but he was actually a good person the entire time. Overall it was not what I was hoping for and so it left me feeling a bit disappointed.
Summary: Wen Xuan is the head disciple for the Water Sect and after quickly advancing, he is now in a rut. Wen Xuan encounters a younger outer disciple, Jian Yi, who seems to know everything about him and promises to stick by his side and help him. Wen Xuan is weirded out and suspicious at first but then he becomes fond of Jian Yi. Jian Yi of course transmigrated into the novel for the sole purpose of helping Wen Xuan and becomes very annoyed when people keep surrounding Wen Xuan.
12/20/25 So I didn't actually remember reading this before at all which is crazy because usually I at least think some moments are similar but I didn't remember any of this at all. Looking back I was reading some of my now favorites so I guess it makes sense that in comparison to those, this one didn't really stand out. Well this second time around, I would give it 3 stars. I really enjoyed the beginning where Jian Yi knows everything and is manipulating everything around Wen Xuan to help him and to get to stay by his side. It did get pretty slow towards the middle but I enjoyed the ending and still agree that there could have been more overt romance.
