Amos Warren, a ranching neighbor of Jack Slater, is eaten up by envy, jealousy, and a lack of ability to run his own ranch. He blames Slater for all his failures and often threatens to burn Slater out.
Warren’s foreman, Sonny Belafleur, is an outlaw using the Warren ranch in a cattle rustling operation tied to feedlot owner Blake Wilson. Wilson has found a flaw in Nevada’s laws concerning brands and when ownership is transferred and is using that flaw to rustle considerable heads of beef. One rustling attempt brings the operation into focus for Jack Slater and his highly intelligent adopted son, Rob. An inept sheriff begs Slater to end the rustling but continues to get in the way.
Warren’s anger and hatred get the best of him and he sends hired gunslingers to burn out the Slater ranch and kill the family. The former Orphan Train boy is driven by love of family and responds with overwhelming ferocity, ending any further threats.
A very fast moving western that really grabs your undivided attention immediately. Jack and Son, Rob along with his ranch hands, especially Cactus Jack, help to break up a rustling ring in their respective territory, The local Sheriff proves to be uninterested in anything, and no more than a political pawn, as his area is filled with ongoing corruption.
Most definitely another outstanding five star masterpiece by Mr. Gunn as this storytelling masterpiece is one exciting episode after the other. There are no slow downs throughout the entire series of unending excitement! A crooked nearby rancher becomes involved in the rustling of his associate ranchers which leads to Jack, and his hands, getting involved! Outstanding storylines throughout this compelling western folklore extravaganza, and the Author's successful selection of characters, who performed their respective areas of responsibility to perfection. Too the camaraderie of the good guys, except for the do nothing Sheriff, went above and beyond in their quest for old western justice. Most definitely recommend this facinatingly impressive western folklore masterpiece to all readers, but especially to you died in the wool western readers. This fast moving, realistically motivated western masterpiece is definitely worthy of your undivided attention from beginning to end! You non-western enthusiasts will find it very troubling to put the story aside until the final word has been read! Definitely challenge all of you on that statement too!!!😃
Jack Slater not only has to contend with rustlers but a foul tempered neighbor and an inept sheriff who doesn’t have the sense God have a small squirrel. Jack takes charge as usual. A humble man of action ready to recede into the background once the crisis du jour is over.
Simplistic and full of clichés but I love this series. Jack is too young to be sounding like an old man dreading the technological changes coming to the range- cars, refrigerators, etc.. He’s already deferring to his adopted son, Robbie, who has a bright future ahead of him in the 20th Century.
Page 73. “Some call it retribution, son. Some call it revenge. In the end, many call it bitter.”
Revenge could be so sweet could he do it? Men who thought they were smarter than the law. Nothing new about that. That is what makes a crook. Takes them a while to figure out right always win. This a good story told just right. There are some really bad men involved here they would just as soon shoot you as look at you. Takes awhile but good wins out.
What a great read! Everything you love about a western is in this book; rustling, friends and family as well as jealousy with a couple old-time neighbors. With son Rob running a breeding program, Jack Slater is busy keeping up with other issues. When cattle begin to disappear, both Jack and Rob take off to find the culprits. Love the book and the genre’. Twins were born at the end of the last book and I had hoped to see them on the ranch. Thanks for an excellent storyline.
Jack Slater and Mims sure have their hands full in this one. A small time, lazy rancher thinks he should have what they have. Maybe he should hire workers instead of gunmen. He takes every opportunity to show how petty he is, including trying to burn Slater out. On top of that, there is some high tech cattle rustling going on.
Jack and Rob Slater, Cactus Jack, the Slater crew, and deputy Burdick fight an organized cattle rustling/meat packing scheme. Jack must also settle with a neighbor jealous of Jack's success.

All over the county, ranchers are reporting cattle missing, but where are they going too?
Wes and Dorothy Trimble are proud of what they had accomplished. Looking out over his ranch he knew that things were finally coming together. They had 3 kids that were about grown, sons Frank and George (George’s nickname was Wuzzie due to his curly hair) and Jennifer. That morning as he was riding out to join his men (his foreman Sam and both boys) when he saw riders riding toward him at a fast clip. Sam and both boys told him that the fence had been cut and around 100 head was gone. Looks like they did it late last night or just before light. They are leaving a wide trail, pa, are we going after them? Wes knew he could not afford to lose that many cattle, it would ruin him. They took off after them. When they caught up with them, a gun battle started. Wuzzie got hit! No, I can’t lose my son, then none of this would have been worth it. Wes sent Frank into Skelton for help!
Ricky Burdick, Deputy Sheriff of Skelton, was with Valley Paddock, postmaster & owner of the Alabama House Saloon, having a beer on this beautiful spring day that had turned warm. The talk was all about the rustling that was going on around the county. No one could figure out where the cows were disappearing to. Suddenly, the door flew open and young Frank Trimble came flying in. Burdick, ya gotta come quick, Wuzzie has been shot, he’s hurt bad, and rustlers have got our heard. Turning to Paddock, he told him to get a group together and follow him. Burdick and Frank took off to find Wes. It was a hard 3-mile ride and the horses were breathing hard when they found Wes and his injured son. Wes beseeched Burdick to save his herd, he could get Wuzzie into town, now that he finally had got the bleeding stopped.
And the story begins…
What did I like? This is my second book about Jack Slater, and I have to say that he is fast becoming another one of my favorite cowboys. I love the values that he has and especially the one about his family. Back then, blood was an unnecessary item to be considered family. Having lost his at a young age, he puts an exceedingly high value on the term family. If you proved yourself and tried to be a good person then you were considered a member of the family, and for Jack Slater that was all that mattered. He had adopted a young man that also had lost his family at a young age, and he and his wife Mims were trying to give him those same values, plus the chance to better himself. Rob Slater, even being related to Jack has not had an easy life. His father was a Spaniard noble but that did not matter to some people. Some people were prejudice even back then! Some judged people, not by what they did but by where they came from. It’s a shame, and even worse, that attitude has not changed even today. As we all know!
What will you like? A peek at the beginning when the cattle industry headed for the twentieth century. Action with more than a little shooting, chasing, mystery, anger, and stupidity! This book shows us a peek at one man’s depth of self-worth when he figured he needed the praise more than the actual work of being a lawman. When the acts of being in charge far outweighed the right and wrong of the law, leading to people being hurt and killed. Taking a good look at another man, that had filled his mind with hatred and jealousy for his neighbor, just because of what he had due to his hard work. The plot takes us out on the range where bullets are flying, cows are disappearing, owl hoots are getting shot, and the dust gets into your eyes.
The details are professionally researched and show that Johnny knows his subject. Exceptionally written with excellent editing. There is more than one lesson to be learned from this storyline. This is an outstanding book to be added to your library, and should, no doubt in my mind be a required read for some of our youths. Add this to your calendar as it will be available on 9/30/20.
