I was looking for a book to help me escape a lifetime of ADHD and motivation problems, but I'm not interested in fluffy inspiration pron or suggestions to make a list and meditate. I wanted to know where EXACTLY my problem with motivation was occurring and how to realistically approach the lifestyle changes necessary to fix it. This book did exactly that- I now see how childhood experiences, personal trauma, and unmet needs have contributed to years of me spinning my wheels in the mud. Having read this (in just a couple hours!), I now have a better understanding of the behavioral science behind decision making, as well as an arsenal of tools I can use to create an environment more conducive to the pursuit of my goals. The writing wasn't the best- it could benefit from an editor to help with structure and style. The author frequently jumps back and forth between points, suddenly returning to talking about an earlier point in the middle of a section about something else. It was also highly repetitive in both ideas and language, but I assume this was to add some meat to an otherwise rather straightforward and very short book. I also slightly resent the theme of "trying hard = success" as it betrays immense privilege and ignores all of the systemic and circumstantial barriers to success for many. All in all, though, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who just can't figure out why they can't get their sh!t together.
It’s important to understand what’s under the hood of motivation. What the root causes and things that impact motivation. Understanding these multiple facets gives you the tools to choose from and thus enable you to hack motivation.
This is a good read as it goes below the surface and gives you some real foundational knowledge and insights into motivation.
