When Zeyad wakes up, and he can not help but think about how lonely he is. He hates that he is avoided by his peers in school. Although Zeyad knows that the reason behind his problem is his temper, he still can not figure out a way to stop getting angry at the people he loves. One day, Zeyad shouted at his sister, Lama. He accused her of stealing his favorite mug, because he did not find it in his room. Zeyad did not know, that Lama was actually washing it for him. Zeyad’s action made Lama very upset. She cried a lot. Zeyad did not know how to act after he knew her good intentions. Zeyad’s grandma, along with his mom, explained to him the importance of anger management. They also gave him many tips and tricks; that he should use whenever he feels like he is about to lash out. When Zeyad applies those tactics, he becomes a more socially intelligent person. The picture book is basically a self-help book embedded in a story. The way the author addresses such a complex issue like anger management, in an implicit and a simple manner, is beyond impressive. The anger management techniques are also written and explained in a way that would make a child, as young as 5 years old, able to fully comprehend. It is also worth mentioning that they are all realistic and easy to apply. Although the book is mainly about anger management, it also touches on many different virtues, but without direct emphasis. For example, the importance of apologizing and taking accountability of one’s own actions are demonstrated in the way Zeyad apologized to his sister at the end. Also, the importance of forgiveness was displayed when Lama forgave her brother immediately after he apologized. Lastly, the way Zeyad chose to listen to his grandma and his
mom, showed how crucial it is to respect adults’ opinions and advice. All of which teach the reader how to be a moral person. The book has really good illustrations. The extent to which Zeyad gets angry is very clear, all from the pictures where he is shown to have overly flushed cheeks. All pictures have vibrant colors, which would easily grab the attention of the young target audience. The depictions of the facial reactions are also very expressive. In my view, looking at the illustrations is enough to make a child with broken Arabic able to understand what is going on in the story; even if he/she does not know the meaning of some of the words.
