A study of equine intelligence and human prejudice, aimed at every rider, whatever their level or area of interest. The author asks people to examine their perceptions of the horse and to consider the animal's intelligence, emotions, social organization, communication and learning.
The author of this book had her horses removed from her care by animal protection. Three of the four of them had to be euthanized due to their pain and suffering. The surviving horse required months of rehabilitation and will likely never be completely physically sound. Some photos of the conditions show one horse kept in a box that was not cleaned of the feces for who can say how long but rather just throwing more straw on top of it. The horse was standing on approximately three feet of compacted manure and straw with its head hitting the box ceiling. It is hard to imagine the poor thing was regularly exercise as taking it in or out of this box would require it scrabbling over a three foot wall of manure and straw every time. I don't think this is a person who anyone should buy books telling them about horses and she certainly shouldn't make money from it.
Not done reading yet!! I'm really loving the info at the beginning about the debate over whether or not a horse actually thinks and has a mind, or if horses are just machines made for mans will.
