Cassidy Cane goes by many titles -- archeologist, anthropologist, adventurer -- but none more fitting than that given to her on some strange worlds: Slipstreamer.
Cassidy slips between worlds, traveling to bizarre planets and alternate Earths to find extraordinary new technologies and artifacts that might better humanity!
When Cassidy finds herself on a planet amidst their Landing Day celebrations, she decides to take part in the fun and festivities. However the fun stops when she tries to examine an ancient artifact of great cultural significance, only to have it go missing and for her to be blamed!
Written with bestselling author of The Six Elemental and The Fifth Queen Ali House! Not to be missed!
Born and raised in Newfoundland, Ali spends most of her time scribbling stories and ideas in notebooks, and is rarely seen without paper and pen. After graduating from MUN with a BFA, she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
She is an avid traveler, foodie, and fan of the Oxford comma.
Her short stories include: The Battle of San Remo (Gathering Storm Magazine Year 2 Issue 8); Twenty-One (Sci-Fi from the Rock [2016]); Honour, The Invisible Boy (Fantasy from the Rock); The Taste of Copper, The Deal (Chillers from the Rock); Authentic New Island Experience, Game Plan (Dystopia from the Rock); The Risk of Dreaming, Fortune Favours the Bold (Flights from the Rock).
Her novels include "The Six Elemental", "The Fifth Queen", a short story collection "The Lightbulb Forest", and "The Variety Show."
This is the second book in the Slipstreamer series, and I should note, for transparency sake, that I will have a novella published under this series in 2021. Ali House, in The Island Artifact, brings us to the island of Newfoundland where the Norse and the Beothuk lived in harmony, and the Norse never abandoned L'Anse aux Meadows. Cassidy Crane happens to come to the island during a large celebration day, celebrating the Norse arriving. While the first Slipstreamers book focused much more on Dr. Gamgee, his recruitment of Cassidy, and her first experience with the portals to other worlds, this one focuses much more on the character, her sense of adventure, and her sense of responsibility. This is a fun story, made even more fun because Cassidy doesn't have a goal or plan, she is simply exploring a new world and all it has to offer, and taking part in the celebrations of the day. It would have been neat to further explore the relationship and community developed between the Beothuk and the Norse, but maybe that will come in a future Slipstreamer novella! I will be honest, I am an archaeologist, and had a little trouble with how Cassidy felt she had a responsibility to study an artifact and broke into a museum to do so (only to be informed that she could have just applied for a permit), but I also accept that that is how archaeologists are often portrayed, so that is a me issue, not an issue with the storytelling. I have a funny feeling I may think this way about more than a few of the Slipstreamer books as Cassidy is an Indiana Jones style antiquarian!
The second episode of Slipstreamers explores an interesting dimension and gives us an excellent opportunity to learn more about Cassidy. I loved the alternate reality of Newfoundland presented here and how the author managed to infuse her ideas into another exciting episode of Slipstreamers!
