Unexpected events make Anuradha Goyel and Arnav Nag get back in touch after many years and they decide to journey together to Sikkim. As they rekindle their friendship, while discovering the hidden spots of this hill town, they also begin to accept various emotions that they have been running away from. Will then Nye-mae-el give them the ultimate happiness that they are looking for? 'Tremors of Love' is about discovering a new place, the self, and love.
The eternal wish of finding that fairy tale life partner of our dreams has mostly been held in captivity of our fate as also social traditions. The age old hackneyed practice of matchmaking by parents, relatives, family friends or a connected priest from a list of suitors for the prospective bride or groom has remained an irreversible norm. Parameters of caste, profession, social status, financial position had been the reckoning factors. And then we are supposed to get into a marital contract which would last beyond seven lives.
But with the changing social fabric, liberalism seeping in slowly but gradually, we may find a very niche segment of people who look for transcending the social barriers and taking it up in their hands to find a life partner of his or her choice led to the inorganic practice of love marriages, a break from the traditional arranged marriages, bringing the aberration in the form of a liberal way of life.
With arranged marriages mostly limited to conservative families, rural families or in caste sensitive regions. Or for couples who vested more faith on a stranger rather than making efforts of finding a life partner. But even for couples who are in a wedlock out of premarital love, there is one element which even love marriage has complied with, albeit in an unspoken way.
Age. This is one barometer which is still followed in near strictest sense even by couples who manage to find their best suit. Most of it is influenced by the prevailing socio-economic compulsions of reaching certain compelling milestones of life to secure financial and economic security or all sorts of material goals of life. Marry by a certain age, kids within time, a house for residential security, kids getting into jobs before parents retire, and eventually old age security. In many ways, it is also a social stigma to have a daughter of marriageable age for long in the family. Confronting or even subsisting with this stigma is beyond the affordability of Indian middle class.
But there are some who want to disengage with all these social notions and wait till the time they find the perfect life partner they were looking for. And this story is precisely about that.
Anuradha, in her 40s had a twinkling heart for Arnav since her early days when they but Arnav never reciprocated in kind. Interestingly rather, Arnav did display a passionate and unsuspecting feeling about Anuradha which he was quite honest and unnaturally candid about.
He has never hid his sexual craving for Anuradha and she has sincerely attended to his urges thinking it as a conduit of finding final acceptance about herself in his life. In doing so, Anuradha too makes her admission that she also enjoys this sexual interaction as a subset of her love for him. A sexual encounter in their early career when they were working together and since then they never met. Ten years passed. Arnav didn’t settle down in life because he was always scared of being committed in the long term. Anuradha never really found a better suitor to find place in her heart. Arnav got busy with his career, Anuradha with hers. Arnav wanted to stay away from women who are commitment phobic.
A deep emotional loss of Anuradha’s father led her to emotional turmoil. She felt bereft of solace and reached out to Arnav after many many moons. Only to know that both have never settled down in life. A trip to a hill station, to take a break from the city’s madness and to escape the grief brought both together.
This story is about the emotional struggle that both of them pass through in that process. Expecting commitment from Arnav, but only getting sex in return. Expecting sex from Anuradha, but trying hard to remain non-committal.
The author weaved out the two characters, showing their internal conflicts, and very carefully choosing the picturesque Hill station of Gangtok for absorbing the tremors of love makes reading this story a blissful experience.
Tremors of Love revolves around two people in their mid-30s, Anu and Arnav. Perhaps, Friends with benefits yet they wish to give a name to their friendship. They share a special bond, so unique that they were unsure whether to take their friendship to the next level, or not? Their compatibility is strong enough to bind them together yet they are so different from one another that making a life's decision together took them 10 years and multiple relations to finally understand that maybe they should give each other a change before it's too late. After the death of their father, Anu and Arnav decide to spend some time together and give each other some hope in their relationship. Whether it works out or not? Find out ... And, a sudden twist in the story changes the entire plot and show them a whole new perspective towards life.
The author has a very simplistic approach to writing this book. It is unique to write an entire book based on just two major characters yet grab the attention of the reader and interwind a beautiful yet simplistic story. Temors of Love like its name suggests does not talk about the tremors of love between the two characters rather the tremors that shook the lives of the character and changed them as a person. An earthquake that shook both worlds and showed them the world they had never imagined.

The one thing that I liked about the book the most is that Aditi has adopted a completely simplistic approach towards writing it. I also want to compliment her for her ability to compose an engaging and entertaining book with just two main characters. The book highlights the fact that the various situations and circumstances tend to impact us deeply as an individual and many times change our lives permanently. I wish Aditi all the best for its success.
