So often, when I introduce myself to a new person and they learn that I am an author, they reply back that they plan to write a book one day. I’m always so excited to learn more about their idea and see how I can help. More often than not, they reply that they haven’t written a single word. They ask me, “how do you write a novel? How do you get started?”
Over the years I’ve written multiple novels and I have condensed my best tips and practices into How To Write Your First Novel: A Guide For Aspiring Fiction Authors. No matter your plan for publishing your novel, you first need to write the book! I’ve broken down the critical elements to success in two parts: your writing habits and your writing craft. You’ll be able to come back and reference this advice throughout your drafting process and as you look to write additional books.
Are you ready to go from aspiring author to author? Are you ready to take your idea and turn it into a book? Let’s get started today!
"Adventure for those who love to read. Ambition for those who love to write."
M.K. Williams writes suspenseful literary fiction for the contemporary reader. Her body of work is comprised of multiple novels, short stories, and her non-fiction work includes her self-publishing guides for aspiring authors.
Her first novel, Nailbiters, is an apocalyptic science-fiction thriller that has kept audiences up all night since its debut in 2015. The sequel, Architects, follows a new set of characters as they navigate the dystopian world created in the aftermath of the invasion. Her second novel, Enemies of Peace, is a cautionary tale of the American Dream gone awry. This domestic thriller has shocked audiences who never saw the final twist coming. Her latest series is a time-travel saga set across multiple universes, The Infinite-Infinite is the first in a series of feminist science fiction books across the multiverse.
Williams’ writing influences include a lifetime of watching suspenseful mysteries and action movies and reading Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan, and Lauren Beukes.
After writing and publishing for years, Williams launched Author Your Ambition where she helps aspiring authors. Through videos, e-courses, and books, she helps first-time authors navigate the ins-and-outs of self-publishing. Her Author Your Ambition series of books cover self-publishing, marketing, and writing craft. Each short and information-packed book is designed to cut to the chase and answer the questions that aspiring authors ask all the time.
Super helpful overview of how to start writing and how to stay on track! Follow up with the resources on M.K.'s website- they are very helpful in setting up plot, characters. Her other books go into marketing and publishing. Technically the 3rd book in the series, but I read it first.
The way MK describes how new authors can refine their writing craft is incredible. I took plenty of notes (both on my Kobo & on my phone for helping me with outlining ideas for books that I'm working on.) I've already self-published 1 novella, and I'm working on my 2nd (of a 9 episode 1st collection) + I have ideas for a number of books directly in the same universe as the novella collection & notes\outlines growing for other books as well :D
This book was so detailed! I'm very impressed. It gives me more knowledge on how to be an author by heart and mind. I learned on how to write a book just like a professional! Before, I thought that some of my knowledge are right but then when I read this book, it changes everything! Thank you M.K. Williams for this wonderful book.I really really love it!
All in all, this book had some useful tips and tricks. As I was listening to the audiobook, I wasn’t able to take any notes the first time around. But I plan to listen to it again at some point, so I can make notes, or I’ll try and get an inexpensive copy of the physical book
